This Washington D.C. Wedding at Meridian House Is Giving Major Twilight Vibes

Justine and Brennan’s Washington D.C. nuptials were all about classic and organic beauty! Meridian House provided a breathtaking backdrop for SRS Events to plan a timeless affair dressed in a French Blue-focused color palette. Wild Pollen’s loose floral arrangements created a garden-like feel for the ceremony while a jazz trio accompanied the warm and inviting reception design, filled with taper candles and votives. Justine and Brennan first booked their wedding venue in late 2019 and then sought to hire their wedding planner, SRS Events, right before COVID struck. From living in DC, Justine and Brennan knew they wanted to host their wedding in the city and show their friends and family why love they to call DC home. Meridian House is historical in and of itself, from being built in 1919 and was designed by the renowned architect, John Russell Pope, who designed the Jefferson Memorial, the National Gallery of Art, and the National Archives. It is also unique to downtown DC in that it has several beautiful outdoor spaces suitable for a wedding ceremony and cocktail, including a Linden Tree grove with the original trees imported from Europe when the home was built.

Justine fell in love with her wedding dress online, from seeing it on a distant friend on her Facebook! She found out the designer, Sarah Seven, and set about purchasing the dress and having it altered to fit to her to perfection. Justine selected Wtoo bridesmaid dresses in French Blue and allowed them to select their favorite style. Although finding the perfect bridesmaid dress was one of the hardest parts of planning, then end result was absolute perfection, and paired perfectly with their organic sweet pea bouquets!

The couple and their wedding planner created a natural, romantic yet timeless and elegant wedding day, incorporating pastel blues, whites, creams and greenery tones. Letterpress save the dates and invitations with delicate soft blue florals gave guests a hint of the wedding design to come.
The florist created a floral design that she describes as:
The aesthetic for the wedding will create a beautiful floral experience that incorporates natural elements to compliment the surrounding space. Arrangements will evoke a feeling of serenity and naturalism, while embodying a loose, organic feel to reflect the raw movement of the flowers. Unique textures and greenery will add a subtle yet impactful organic garden inspired feel. The over-all feeling of your big day will invite guests to relax, dance, and celebrate at an intimate, urban garden inspired event.

Flowers used include: garden roses, lisianthus, dahlia, sweet pea, clematis, ranunculus,
tulip, hydrangea, hellebore, seasonal greens and foliage.

Justine's bouquet was petite to not overwhelm her tiny frame, and beautiful dress. In fact, we had a bridal bouquet mockup created to ensure everything would be perfect on the wedding day.

Although the wedding happened in mid-2021 after vaccines had come out, it was very important to the couple that the celebration was safe for guests. As such, they decided to downsize their guest list to 85 guests, and make it a requirement that all guests were vaccinated before the wedding. One final surprise they received during their planning is the best man's wife went into labor the day before the wedding!
The bride got ready in her childhood home in Bethesda Maryland, about 20 minutes from the venue, and the groom got ready in their own home in Washington DC. It was so special for the bride getting ready in her childhood home with so many of her closest friends surrounding her.

The ceremony was held in the Linden Tree Grove, which has the perfect aisle way in between the trees leading to the beautiful asymmetrical floral arch as the ceremony focal point with the sounds of the string musicians in the background. The couple's close friend, Peter, who was also a groomsman, officiated their ceremony. In DC, anyone can apply for an authorization to be able to legally sign the marriage license! After the ceremony, guests enjoyed cocktail hour in the garden and enjoyed various bites such as Argentinean steak crostini, Gruyère gougère, and butternut squash bisque soup sips and specialty drink libations of Blackberry Smash and Whiskey Sour. A jazz trio provided music during cocktail hour.
For the reception design, lots of candles from tapers, pillars and votives were used to create a warm, inviting and romantic ambiance in the dining room. Tables featured either a beautiful floral compote centerpiece or a mixture of dark sage foliage and pillar candles. The couple chose to sit at a sweetheart table and the fireplace mantle adorned with florals was the perfect backdrop for them. The 3-tier wedding cake featured two delectable flavors: Apple cake, pear butter, salted caramel buttercream and elderflower soaked lemon cake, blackberry jam, vanilla buttercream. Alternating white floral sprigs festooned the cake displayed in the library.

After sharing a first dance to Conversations in the Dark by John Legend, the couple sneaked out for a private sparkler moment with the photographers before they departed. After dancing the night away, the newlyweds enjoyed a honeymoon in Turks and Caicos. Congratulations to Dr Justine Record and Mr Brennan Thews!
