Two Cancer Warriors Fall in Love...When Least Expected

The reason that I started Style Me Pretty in the first place was fairly simple...the love stories. Yes, the details are wonderful. The gowns are gorgeous. But really, it begins and ends with a story. And this tale will take your breath away. They met while she was being treated with cancer...and he was watching his father beat cancer. They fell in love. And have begun to live happily ever after. Life has no rules and these two have proven that you simply don't need them...love trumps all. Thank you to the amazing photographer - Heidi-o-photo - for capturing it all so beautifully. From the bride...Isaac and I met our senior year of high school in Mr. Bailey’s english class. I had just come back to school after battling cancer the year prior. Mr. Bailey helped promote my story through Make-A-Wish Foundation, and that is how Isaac knew about my illness. Isaac’s dad battled cancer and heart surgery at the same time I battled cancer. I remember Isaac asked me about my illness and he could relate because he went through it with his dad. It was then that we both new we were special to each other. I would go with my girlfriends to watch his basketball games. He would come over and we would make cupcakes.

My friend put it this way…
Once upon a time, the most beautiful and kind-hearted girl in the world met the guy of her dreams in her English class senior year of high school. He was smart and funny and had a special place in his heart for puppies. He was good at math in that annoying "I don't even study kind of way" and she had a smile that could brighten even the darkest of days. They always supported each other, and laughed at each other's jokes, no matter how stupid they were. Then the day came when he asked her to be his wife. And she, of course, said yes!

Isaac and I got engaged at Hume Lake on August 31, 2014. Every year since Isaac was little, he and his family would go to Hume Lake for some family time up in the beautiful Sequias. When we started dating, it became our special place too. On labor day weekend, 2016, Isaac got all of our friends and family together to go to the Annual Country Festival at Hume Lake. Early Sunday morning, Isaac and I woke up to take our walk around the lake like we do every year. When we arrived at the bridge towards the end of our walk, Isaac stopped and got down on one knee. It was happening! But then, before I could even start crying, I was caught by surprise! All these people came walking out from under the bridge and the bushes to watch! We were surrounded by my family, and his family, and our closest friends. It was magical! He asked me to marry him and of course, I said YES!

I specifically wanted a garden wedding under the stars and market lights. It was fun, laid back, and meaningful! We did as many DIY projects as possible. We made the centerpieces. They were made up of roses from Isaac’s mom’s garden, along with some other wild flowers. Underneath the vase was a burlap/ lace setting. We also made lavender boutonnieres for the side of the chairs down the aisle. They were fun and super easy to make. My nana and aunt from Canada helped me assemble them. Isaac’s mom and sisters decorated the wedding arch with an assortment of greenery and babies breath. We also decorated the wedding succulent pots with burlap.

My dress was the most beautiful dress I could have imagined myself wearing on our wedding day. I must have tried on 50 or more dresses, but none of them were the one. I had this image in my mind that no dress could compare to. I realized after thinking long and hard about the dress I wanted to wear. That when I realized that I had always thought of my mother’s dress as the most beautiful wedding dress, so we made one like it! I found a lace dress that I fell in love with but I wanted it to have my mom’s detachable train on it. After I bought my dress, I had a dressmaker replicate my mother’s wedding train in the same lace of my dress. My mom had a bow on her dress as well, so we added that on my dress too. I loved every part of it!

I am a control freak and a people pleaser at the same time. There were times where I just wanted to elope and get rid of planning a wedding. But those were just brief moments! I’m so grateful for all the help and love that surrounded us while we planned this big event! We couldn’t be more blessed! We look back and the little things we were upset about were silly!

The biggest advice I would say is plan it together because it is your wedding. He will say it's your (the bride’s) big day, and he means it, but remember to capture what he loves too!
