From Westwood Design…I always remind people that this should be the most special bouquet of flowers you’ve ever held. It needs to trump every bunch of roses you’ve been given and be far more exciting than those hydrangeas you buy down the market every Sunday. You’ll never forget it, you’ll be glad that you went for something with a bit of Ooh La Laaaaa.I spend time with my couples, I get to know them and their likes and dislikes, we take inspiration from a random painting they like because it reminds them of when they met. I then like to challenge couples, suggest things that they wouldn’t normally think they’d like because we have to be challenged sometimes in order to create something completely unique.
One of the reasons I love my job so much is the additional challenge that the seasons give me. Nature will do as it pleases and we need to work with it, not against it. You may have seen the perfect bouquet on Pinterest, but your wedding is in September and peonies are out of season, so let’s take that bouquet as inspiration and create something new, working with the best quality flowers that are available to us. For this bouquet, I wanted to create something that is the absolute epitome of Spring. In England, the first true sign of Spring is the daffodils and narcissus that seem to have bloomed overnight along our parks and pavements so it seemed appropriate to use these as inspiration for my design.
You may surprise yourself when it comes to colour. For instance, I am someone that pretty much only ever wears black, cream and grey. I’m not a colourful person, but when it comes to flowers, the more I work with them the more I appreciate unexpected colour combinations. I would never ever wear yellow, but a hand dyed marigold silk ribbon tied to a bouquet of peach and burnt orange flowers? Yes please! You don’t have to be a colourful person to have a colourful personality and I like to think that your wedding flowers should be an extension of your personality. They are an expression of your happiness on this special day.
Be open to your florists artistic direction and trust them to pick flowers that are suited to you. This is why it is so important that we know as much about your day as possible. As a stylist as well as a florist, I am obsessed with the tiny details! Each arrangement we make will have it’s own unique quality and the shape of your bouquet will often be determined by each individual stem and it’s personal formation. This means that the final result, with it’s unique shape, unexpected colour combinations and flower varieties, will be solely yours, perfectly captured forever.
