From Miss to Mrs: How to Legally Change Your Maiden Name in 5 Easy Steps

Help: I'm officially a procrastinator. I've been married for 322 days and I still haven't changed my last name! Reason being? It all seems a little too complicated (ain't nobody got time for that I say), that is - until today. Because I've finally found the tools needed to help me get started and it's all outlined below!

First things first, you'll need the original marriage license (with the raised seal) and your new last name on it. If you don't have this handy, be sure to call the clerk's office where your license was filed to get copies although in most cases one should automatically sent to you.

The first step is changing the name listed on your social security card. To do this, visit the Social Security Administration's website and fill out the application for a new Social Security card. Please note that you'll keep the same SSN, it's important to note that just your name will be different. Once you've completed the application, mail it (or go in person) to the local Social Security Administration office. After 10 business days you'll have your new social security card!

Choose a weekday (before 12 pm is best) and take a trip to the local DMV's office, it's time to get an updated license with your new last name! Bring absolutely every single form of identification you can lay your hands on. Some good items to bring along: your old license, your certified marriage license, your new social security card, and a good magazine it might be a bit of a wait.

Time to update those bank accounts! The quickest way to change your name at your bank is to go into the branch location. Be sure to bring your new driver's license AND your marriage license. Be sure to request new checks and electronic cards (debit + credit if applicable) on top of changing the name attached to your accounts.

Once you've got an updated Social Security card and Driver's License with your new last time, all the other changes should come easy. While some establishments may require just a phone call to make the update, others may ask for a copy of your marriage certificate and/or social security card so keep these handy!

The hard work is done! Celebrate with a date night, ideas below!
