From The Bride…Devin and I met on our first day of work in (very) snowy Boston. I had just moved to the East Coast from a small town in Michigan, and he was a lifelong East Coaster through and through. It took us months before we spent an afternoon together, but once we did – we were never apart again.

Our love story was not one of love-at-first-sight, but built on years of shared passions and experiences. Devin and I are partners in all of life’s big and little adventures – whether we’re traveling, relocating to another coast or discovering a shared love for a new author.

After two failed attempts at a proposal (rear-ended, bird stole our lunch) Devin popped the question while we were sitting in the warm sun watching sailboats skim across San Francisco Bay.

We didn’t have to look far for inspiration for our wedding. We decided early-on that each decision we made would be rooted in something meaningful, and the aesthetic would be natural and romantic. We wanted a day that was full of details specific to our relationship and a party that never felt too fussy. We chose Fall to avoid the rush of the Summer wedding season, and Arizona for its perpetual blue sky and proximity to my parents’ winter home.

We partnered with the incredibly talented Lucky & In Love to design our event, and the wonderful duo at Ace & Whim to capture every detail on film.

My bridal party was small with my sisters in shades of wine and my nieces in soft ballet pink. The groom chose a sapphire blue tuxedo which was a perfect complement to his baby blues. My shoes weren’t only chosen for comfort – my pink Ferragamo jellies were an homage to my favorite childhood shoes that were a gift from my dad.

Devin went traditional with his bridal gift, choosing a stunning David Yurman cuff with pearl caps. I chose a Shinola Detroit watch for Devin as a nod to my Michigan roots.

At our ceremony, a string quartet played modern songs that reminded us of our family and friends as they were greeted with a glass of champagne. We recited our vows under an arch hand-crafted by my father, and a decades-old rosary hung nearby in a tree blessing us with perfect weather. Devin’s wedding band was made from the white gold from his father’s original ring, and our unity candle was the same candle lit by my parents at their wedding in 1971.

My big brother and Devin’s godmother each performed a reading of their choosing. My brother was my very first best friend and happens to have Down Syndrome. He spent almost a year practicing his reading – I can’t begin to describe the swell of pride we felt when he recited his blessing. He did an incredible job and it was so special to us.

Our monogram and stationery were custom-creations of Devin’s talented brother, and the hexagonal accents come from Devin’s nickname for me – “Honeybee”. Each invite envelope had a deep red wax seal with the silhouette of a whippet as a nod to our dog, Pickles. Our incredible event planner Katherine Thornhill at Lucky & In Love created our reception backdrop with weathered pages from torn up novels. Lush florals in brass vessels from Sarah’s Garden, and tall, simple candlesticks were the perfect romantic complements to the Tuscan stone at Silverleaf Club. Handcrafted tea light holders made from fallen birch trees at the bride’s family home were ever-present throughout the reception.

We decided to forgo the traditional for table numbers, instead using the names and a quote from our favorite authors to accompany each place card strung across a chalkboard wall hand-crafted by my father. Each place setting was wrapped in an oxblood velvet ribbon with a sprig of fragrant rosemary. Guests were gifted the Adventure Log from Word. Notebooks as a nod to our passion for travel, and the start of our biggest adventure yet.

At the end of the night, we were overwhelmed by the feeling that no matter how far life had taken us, our family and friends are our home. We had a day surrounded by the people we love most and will forever be grateful to those who attended and to each and every person who helped us make our dreams a reality.
