From the Bride... Long before boys and boyfriends were something I was even interested in, I remember my dad saying how he pictured me getting married here — at home — someday. Years later, when we got engaged, it all still looked the same. Still the same old barn where I had swung from a rope down to the trampoline below as a kid, filled with hay as high as the ceiling, and bursting at the seams with my dad’s “toys.” But, man oh man that was ALL about to change. From the moment Kervin and I said “YES” to having our wedding at my parents’ home, our community of friends and family worked incessantly to make our day a reality! Our day truly would not have been possible without the help of our friends, family, and neighbors. From removing all the hay (that was so old it was no longer in barrels, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone!), cementing the floor, rebuilding an entire corner of the barn foundation + creating a custom built-in bar in another corner, to rewiring the electricity (there was only one light in the whole barn) someone was always there to lend a hand. My mom spent weeks with a local garden shop owner discussing how to redo her garden beds and planning where and which types of flowers would be best for our fall wedding. This, of course, was all just the beginning.
I loved so many things about our day that I couldn’t pick just one, but the most special were the personalized touches. My mom collected all different wooden chairs from garage sales, craigslist, neighbors, and friends for seating at the ceremony and reception. I really wanted wooden barn tables to complete that “rustic” look, however I knew it just wasn’t economical for the amount of people we wanted to seat, so my dad offered to build them ALL. For dessert we had a cake, but we also asked close friends and family to make our most favorite treats. To go along with our BBQ theme, our favors were dry rubs my uncle made from veggies from his own garden. My maid of honor designed all of our table numbers. My parents found an old surrey at an auction and reupholstered it for us. My mom's dear friend, a retired florist, did all of the gorgeous floral arrangements. My veil was handmade by a family member. I could go on and on for pages about all of the things that made our day SO special to us.
Writing our own vows was possibly one the hardest things, but was so, SO meaningful to us, and of course, in true fashion to where I grew up, two trains came by whistling loudly during our ceremony (I’ll take it as their token of celebration)!
My advice to future brides is be intentional in planning your wedding details, but know that not everything will go as planned, and that is OK! Your wedding day will be still be absolutely unforgettable, and you are probably the only one will even notice.
