From Outlive Creative…Jessi, the co-founder at Outlive Creative is inspired by the tropics of Hawaii. When she was visiting the islands this summer her favorite moments were spent hiking through thick jungles to find waterfalls at the end. She trekked over large entangled roots, walked under hanging vines, leaped rocks to cross rivers, and climbed boulders. She and the Outlive Team are blessed to have similar features in their own back yard in Portland, Oregon. Jessi wanted to introduce the Hawaiian tropical rainforest to Oregon’s Northwest rainforest. Inspired by this concept, Outlive Creative produced a “TROPICAL NORTHWEST STYLED SHOOT”.The style of the shoot was based around the concept of having a retro Hawaiian rainforest meet a modern Northwest rainforest. The first vendor who Outlive Creative reached out to was Pilar from Vintage Mingle. The owner, Pilar is very sweet, kind, down to earth, and authentic. Pilar was able to contribute the dinnerware for the shoot.
Susanna from Pistils and Stamen, contributed to the shoot in a tremendous way. By designing gorgeous floral arrangements, Susanna was able to turn the concept into a reality. “It was important to have a good balance of tropical rainforest elements intertwined with our Northwest rainforest environment. Her floral designs fit the theme perfectly” says Jessi. One of the team’s favorite elements of the shoot were provided by Lynn from Vitreluxe. Lynn is another Portland based artist. He is an award winning artist, designer, and craftsman. The Vitreluxe studio is nestled in the lower southeast district of the city where he focuses on glass working. He provided all of the glass vases and holders. Vitreluxe Glass Works was founded by Lynn in 1999 and has earned a highly regarded reputation for distinctly creative work that employs a wealth of techniques. The studio functions off of 100% renewable energy.
The dress was important to fit the occasion. Though lace is gorgeous, we wanted to stray away from the vintage appeal and replace it with a retro flare. To achieve this vision, we sought after local Portland dress designer, Lena Medoyeff. Lena’s dresses are handmade in the beautiful Northwest. They embody a spirit of independence and do not compromise on quality. The company has been providing dress designs since 1998. The dresses are handmade from all natural silk or one hundred percent cotton, colored by natural vegetable and mineral dyes, and stitched by talented seamstresses.
Sarahi from Pure Elegance worked her magic to create the perfect bridal look for this shoot. She used tropical inspired colors that coordinated perfectly with the color scheme. Lastly, Rosy from Rosy Cakes provided a custom wedding cake handmade and sculpted to perfection. The patterned cake was created by Outlive Creative’s lead designer, Nick. This past summer, co-founders of Outlive Creative, Jessi and Race spent most of their time exploring the Columbia River Gorge. They knew that the Gorge would be a perfect location for their editorial wedding shoot. Using their resources, they found a cozy home on Airbnb that was located in White Salmon, Washington where they shot preps. They held the wedding ceremony at Horsetail Falls, a pretty 40 minute drive from downtown Portland.
The team at Outlive Creative love fine art film photography, it is their favorite medium to shoot in. “Film helps us to see, feel, value, and appreciate every shot that we take. Film photography helps us connect and engage with the practice in a way that digital photography cannot” says Jessi. In addition to photography, Outlive Creative wanted to film the concept so they could produce a cinematic wedding film. This styled shoot gave the team an opportunity to showcase their own wedding cinematography style. These images were taken with a Contax 645 with Kodak Portra film. Outlive Creative sends all of their film rolls into Northwest’s premiere film lab for processing, PhotoVision.
