From Ryan Flynn Photography…Jonathan and Marissa exchanged vows and celebrated the 4th of July holiday weekend with their closest friends and family at the beautiful Rosario Resort on Orcas Island. Hiking, BBQing, bonfires, dancing, fireworks. What the 4th of July weekend is all about.
From The Bride & Groom…We got engaged at the beautiful Washington Park Arboretum shortly before Memorial Day 2014, and while we had talked of getting engaged the timing itself was a complete surprise to Marissa which made it that much more special. We knew from the get-go that we wanted to get married somewhere in the San Juan Islands and that with our large extended families and group of friends, we needed a venue with a large capacity to handle all our guests (around 200). Luckily, we found the beautiful Rosario Resort & Spa and instantly fell in love. It had everything we wanted and more; stunning views, enough rooms to house all our guests, just enough seclusion to feel a million miles away from everything, and amazing food!
We wanted our wedding to have a sophisticated yet casual feel and for everyone to have a great time. We also really wanted the scenery and venue to speak for themselves so we went with a lot of natural design elements that you would find on the island – local plants and flowers you might find hiking up beautiful Mt. Constitution which was just steps away from the resort. The ceremony wasn’t very traditional itself with the two of us coming from different religious backgrounds. But we incorporated both with a scripture reading from the Bible and the Jewish tradition of breaking the glass. We were married under a traditional Jewish Chuppah, which the groom and his step-father built using trees they had felled themselves. Many other handmade items made it into the wedding as well, including the guest thank you gifts, wedding day signs, etc.
Jonathan’s favorite memory: The Ceremony. We had one of our best friends officiate the ceremony – an intimately personal touch – and there wasn’t a dry eye as we shared those moments on a bluff overlooking the Puget Sound with all our loved ones. I blame it on the fact that, as I said at one point during the ceremony, “the Sun is just really really bright”.
Marissa’s favorite moment: Trekking through the forest with our amazing photographer Ryan Flynn – not easy in heels and a wedding dress, but definitely worth it :)
There are so many pieces of advice you get when planning a wedding, and even more you could give to other couples planning theirs. If we had to pick our best advice, we would say to plan for what you want the day to look like and what you want to happen, but ultimately know that no matter what you both will still end up married at the end of the day. Don’t sweat every detail, because not everything goes perfectly and you’re there with family and friends and each other – and that is all that matters.
