From The Bride…Jay and I dated briefly in high school before reuniting five years ago, and got engaged last October on the eve of a long-awaited trip to Paris. We frequently make day trips to Rockport and Bearskin Neck during the summer months, and when we began the search for a venue I was immediately drawn to the charm and character at the Rockport Art Association. The rustic wooden beams and twinkling lights gave the space a warm, barn-like atmosphere, and the constant rotation of artwork was a delightful surprise; the galleries were switched the night before so we didn’t know what the art on the walls would be until we arrived on our wedding day. We wanted our wedding to feel like a reflection of our style and personalities, and the RAA lent itself perfectly to the casual, cozy vibe that suits us best.

Our wedding was truly a labor of love. My husband made our table numbers and our sidewalk easel (which my brother-in-law then illustrated beautifully the morning of our wedding). My mother and I made the flower girl dresses, ribbon wands, and sewed and hand dyed the table runners. We dip-dyed muslin bags filled with saltwater taffy from a local shop, Tuck’s Candy for our favors–and covered plain glass votives with glitter to add a bit of sparkle to the tables. I hand-painted our cake toppers, and love them so much that I hope to repurpose them into ornaments for our Christmas tree. I also decided to DIY all the flowers. My mother-in-law had a hidden talent for floral arranging, and we spent the day before the wedding putting together the centerpieces and bridesmaids bouquets. My sister assembled my bouquet with dahlias grown in my mother and step-father’s garden. When we buy our first house, we plan to relocate the tubers so our wedding flowers can bloom every year on our anniversary.

It was amazing to see the beautiful results of all that time and effort on our wedding day. We chose to say traditional vows during our simple ceremony, because I wanted to speak aloud the same words that other people had said before me, and truly anchor myself in this tradition. I felt suspended in time in those moments. Our last dance of the night was “Shut Up and Dance with Me” by Walk the Moon, and everyone joined us on the dance floor. The room was bursting with joy. We are so fortunate that so many people came together to help us celebrate.
