From The Bride...Ethan proposed to me while we were on a trip to Portland, Oregon last fall. I was running my first marathon that morning and had no idea what was about to happen! My sister and brother-in-law were there with us the morning of the race. My brother-in-law and I finished the marathon elated, tired, and sore as ever. Ethan and I headed back to the hotel to clean up and spend a day adventuring in the city. Later that evening, we made our way downtown for a date night dinner. I was so tired I didn’t even realize that he barely ate anything! After dinner, he convinced me to walk across the same bridge I had just finished the marathon on to grab some well-deserved dessert! I’m chatting up a storm about how amazing Portland looks at night, while Ethan is looking for a small ‘X’ that’s been placed on the ground in chalk. You see, he had hired a local photographer to secretly capture our moment on film! We got about a quarter of the way across the bridge and he stops to take a panoramic picture. Next thing I know, he’s giving me the most adorable love speech and he’s down on one knee! My hands fly to my face, my jaw drops, and I’m happier than ever as I shout out “yes yes yes”!

The overall inspiration for our wedding was our common love for the outdoors mixed with our modern style approach. We really wanted a space that had an outdoor ceremony with an industrial reception area and we found that at Millwick! The venue has so much built-in style with funky accents like gold walls, a parrot couch, and eclectic wallpaper behind the bar.

We created a wax paper backdrop as our alter and it added a subtle frame for the ceremony. We also installed small bouquets along the aisles, which allowed us to capture the look and feel we imagined for the ceremony. Our florists, Sean and Aldo, really came through on the table arrangements with a simple eucalyptus garland and charcoal grey table runner that laced the wooden tables. We felt that was all that was needed to bring out the stylish features of the venue. Simple but magical, romantic, and modern - we loved the way everything came together for the reception that evening.

Our favorite moment of the day was definitely our vows. Leading up to our wedding everyone had given us the advice of staying present and savoring as many moments as possible. As much as we tried, it really did feel like the day was a whirlwind, but the few still minutes we shared exchanging our vows was something we’ll never forget. It felt like Ethan was the only one around me, like time was standing still. That was definitely the most meaningful part of the whole day. Although, I’d like to add that a close runner up for favorite moment of the night was Ethan dancing to Rock Your Body by Justin Timberlake!

Some of our other favorite details from the night were the projection screen at Millwick - which allowed us to show home videos of us as kids during the reception, getting to carve our initials into the wooden bar outside, and enjoying Mochi from an old-fashioned ice cream cart.

One piece of advice we would give to future brides and grooms is – don’t sweat the details on the day of! Not everything is going to go exactly how you planned (I forgot to wear my veil!), but at the end of the day you get to leave the best party of your life, married to your best friend.
