Rustic + Romantic Vancouver Wedding

Some couples are high school sweethearts, but this couple met when they were 12-years-old in eighth grade science class. Sixteen years later, they said, “I do” in a wedding filled with DIY charm and an abundance of personality. And trust us, you don’t want to miss a thing—from the cheese cake wedding cake to the custom beer growler weddings favors. See it all from Christine Pienaar Photography here.

From the Bride… I remember Dave as the boy with the floppy hair that sat in the back of science class in her Grade 8 years. We had mutual friends, and sometimes I’d punch his shoulder when I passed him on the way from the south to north building at Burnaby North Secondary School.

We became closer friends as we progressed through high school. Looking back it seems like a blur, but I think I always knew he would be part of my life. We entered university and our friendship continued to flourish. Through new friends and old friends, achievements and failures, student clubs, and the occasional class, we stayed great friends. We started working and began to build our adult life. I like to think that we grew up together. Then, on May 23, 2009, and after 11 years of friendship, we started dating. We discovered our mutual love for food. We travelled. We survived a year apart while I ate cheese in Holland. About 5 years after we started dating, I walk into our apartment after dinner, greeted with hundreds of photos, balloons, flowers, and a clever puzzle… and my best friend asked me to marry him.”

From Christine Pienaar Photography… Everything from Kims incredible calligraphy skills, their cheese-cake (literally cheese!) and their fun-filled musical entrance to their reception makes this day unforgettable!

Kimberly and David met when they were 12 years old, in Grade 8 science class. After 11 years of friendship (attending the same high school and university) and then five years of dating, they were married at Heritage Hall in Vancouver, Canada. They live in the downtown area and thought it would be appropriate to get married in their beautiful neighbourhood, surrounded by close friends and family.

They wanted their wedding to be customized to their interests and relationship, and decided on a DIY Heritage Hall wedding. Kimberly, who dabbles in graphic design and is an avid Pinterest user, designed the wedding website, invitations, and other decor, and David organized the all the vendors, rentals, and organization of the day! They make a great team!

They were also very excited about their unique favors- beer growlers. These two absolutely love the growing micro-brewery industry in Vancouver, and decided to make custom beer growlers for their guests. The food (delicious!) was catered by The Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, a culinary school close to where David works, and customized the menu with their favorite food. Their wedding “cheese cake” was inspired by (1) Kimberly’s love for cheese and (2) when she lived in Holland and they successfully survived a long-distance relationship. (Win: the “cheese cake” was cheaper than a regular wedding cake, and doubled as an appetizer during their cocktail hour before the dinner reception!).

Kimberly and Dave’s wedding was so customized and personal. It was a truly beautiful way for them to share their relationship with their friends and family on such an important day.
