Vintage Chic Toronto Fall Wedding
It's my belief that brides should spend the night before their wedding doing something relaxing with their girlfriends; this Bride here took after my own heart, spending the evening assembling all of her floral arrangements with her maids. They created works of art for the celebration the next day and Up In The Clouds Photography captured it all. Head this way to see these fantastic final results.
From Up In The Clouds Photography... Kristen and Jesse's wedding was filled with vintage DIY ideas. The day began at One King West, where both the bride and groom prepared separately for the ceremony, but no visit to One King West is complete without stepping down the sweeping central staircase to the original underground bank vault. Built directly into the bedrock in 1913, the bridal party posed in front of the 4-foot thick steel door.
From the custom made bridal gown & vintage inspired shoes, to the antique books used as centerpieces for the reception, the bride made sure no detail was left untouched. She even created the bridal bouquets and managed to finish them (along with the help of her bridesmaids) on the morning of the wedding. The ceremony began at Metropolitan United Church in Toronto where the couple fell in love all over again. Later on the bride and groom enjoyed a lovely ride in a vintage Rolls Royce to the historic Distillery District for the bridal party photo shoot, surrounded by cobblestone streets & more vintage cars. I absolutely love the colours that were on the display throughout the day, from the green bridesmaids gowns, to the pink coloured walls at the reception hall. The bride also constructed the candy station and green floral backdrop for the dessert table. Guests signed a large slab of wood which was used as a guest book and found their seating chart displayed on a vintage screen. To top it all of, a very unique whiskey and cigar bar was made for the the guests to enjoy drinks and party the night away.
From the Bride... Jesse and I knew each other before we became a couple through mutual friends, however it wasn’t until we met again at a country fair years later that sparks started to fly. The fair was held in a town directly between Jesse’s small country town and the suburb city I called home, to this day we like to joke about meeting in the middle.
Five years later during a game of golf on my birthday, I performed one of my typical celebration dances and asked Jess if he was proud of my game thus far. After turning around, he replied on one knee that he was so proud he wanted me to be his wife. After another celebration dance of course I promptly agreed!
After a few months of being engaged the wedding planning process began. We first decided that we wanted our wedding to be both romantic and whimsical, with a 1920’s feel. We carried this out by selecting a historical church for our ceremony and a hall that was built in 1850. Our hall was the perfect selection for us as it would let us bring in and personally select every aspect of our wedding. We also choose to have a whiskey and cigar bar, a pianist playing 1920's music upon our guest’s arrival into the reception space, tables named after 1920's romance novels among other touches to carry out our 1920's theme.
One of our favourite things to do as a couple is renovate our century home, and over the years of doing it our DIY skills have been amplified. So it seemed perfectly natural to take a similar approach with our wedding. It worked out that pretty much every aspect of our wedding was done by us. From doing all of the centerpieces, place settings, to searching through thrift stores for items for the candy bar and whiskey table, to major construction items.
The day before our wedding my maids and I took on our greatest DIY project. One of my bridesmaids Emily Ryan headed our flower mission. Together we worked for months choosing the vases for centerpieces, the type of flowers and colours we would use. With a hotel room FILLED with beautiful flowers we all set out creating center piece arrangements, pew flower arrangements, bouquets and boutonnieres. Being able to spend the night before our wedding with some of favourite people in the world crafting was, in my eyes, the perfect way to spend the day.
On the morning of our wedding my wonderful groom to be drove a U-Haul van down to the hall and unloaded all of our handmade flower centerpieces, a dozen totes with all of the decorations and detailed instructions for the day in them. Call me Type A, but hey this was the biggest party of my life, and a very special day to us. There, our extremely talented month of coordinator set up the day.
Most brides say the day goes by in a flash and is it ever true! One of my favourite moments of the day was after our ceremony Jesse and I rode alone in a 1949 Rolls Royce. It was the perfect way to spend our first moments of man and wife together. The rest of the day of course had its bumps, which is always to be expected, but while eating dinner looking at all of our friends and family enjoying the day we created together was an amazing feeling!
