Intimate Switzerland Destination Wedding
I hadn't realized how gorgeous and romantic Switzerland was until I began going through these stunning photos by Amanda Nippoldt. She was lucky enough to experience this elegant wedding firsthand and with her photos and the beautiful work of Soda Films, I'm left day dreaming of the Swiss countryside and lace veils blowing in the wind. The Swiss chocolate and cheese doesn't hurt either.
From The Bride… I first met Patrick when a mutual friend hosted a dinner party and set us up. Patrick is from Texas, and the first thing I said to him was that I didn’t care much for Texas because I had just moved from there. Luckily, he saw that as a challenge to prove me wrong. He spent the rest of the night convincing me that only the best men come from Texas. Luckily, he was very convincing.
Patrick decided to seal the deal while we were visiting my family in Europe over the holidays. Patrick and I flew to Switzerland in December to spend Christmas with my family. We took a couple’s trip over the weekend to Zermatt. Patrick decided to wait until our very last night in the city to pop the question. That evening he took me out to an amazing dinner at the foot of the Matterhorn, and he started telling me how much he loved me and then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was incredibly romantic! He had already told the wait staff that he was planning on proposing so they came out with champagne and dessert for us!
When it came to finding our venue, we were very lucky to have found our venue almost immediately after we got engaged. While we were still in Switzerland the week after our engagement, we went up to the Uetliberg in Zurich with my family. The location is famous for its incredible 360-degree views of Zurich and the Alps. Naturally, Patrick and I immediately fell in love with the hotel and couldn’t wait to share such an incredible location with our incoming guests.
Since Switzerland is famous for it’s the Alps, chocolate and cheese we wanted to find ways to tie all of them together, so we “treated” our guests to local delicacies, and used the phrase “love is sweet” to describe our celebration. Guests arrived to find “Welcome” letters and bags filled with local Swiss chocolates and even tried out some fondue at our cocktail hour!
It was also important to us to incorporate my Swiss heritage and my future husband’s home state, Texas. In keeping with the American South traditions, we had a bridal cake for both of us, but then Patrick had a “Groom’s Cake” that came in the shape of Texas. In keeping with our elegant vision, we went with white flowers that were all locally grown in Switzerland at the time of our wedding, so none of them had to be imported…dahlias, hydrangeas, sweet peas, roses, and of course—edelweiss!
Overall our wedding day was very personal and romantic. Patrick and I were very lucky to have shared our day with so many friends and family abroad and wouldn’t change a thing!
