From the Bride… James and I met in New York in December 2010, just 5 months after he moved to the city from Sydney, Australia. From the moment we got engaged in London last fall, we knew we wanted a Brooklyn wedding that would feel true to our roots, our Jewish background and our style.

We were thrilled to find 501 Union, a venue that had just opened in Gowanus mere blocks from our apartment. We loved every detail, from the massive skylight and modern chandeliers to the frosted glass doors and marble bar top – not to mention the vintage car out front from the venue’s first life as a classic car repair shop! The space felt elegant and timeless. All we needed to add were our personal touches – photos of our grandparents from their weddings, vintage playing cards for table numbers and antique-style keys attached to handwritten placecards by Elizabeth Castro. Of course, the look would not have been complete without the bright and gorgeous floral arrangements by Rhonda at August Sage and Violet!

We were married by our friend and Rabbi, Levi Shmotkin, in a traditional Jewish ceremony under a chuppah that James constructed by hand. We were able to include our friends and family, many of whom had traveled from as far as Sydney, in our ceremony as they read aloud our marriage blessings. I was so happy to be married with the same ring my grandma received at her wedding in Brooklyn nearly 70 years earlier.

James’ friends and family from Australia started off the party with a hora that I’m pretty sure most guests will never forget and we danced late into the night with great music from our Brooklyn-based DJ, Play Something Good. Our caterer, Heavenly Events, wowed us with the food, especially the wedding pies that we had in place of a traditional wedding cake. Every last detail was seamlessly executed by our planner, Jove Meyer – I loved that I did not have to worry about a thing and was truly able to enjoy my wedding with my husband! I am in awe when I relive the day through photos by the incredibly talented Rebecca Yale, who captured the love and joy of small moments so effortlessly.
