Urban Georgetown Loft Wedding at Powerhouse

From Vicki Grafton Photography…Katie and Carter were married on May 10th. Their ceremony and reception can be described as having an urban loft feel with succulents and soft blues and greens. They had their first look across the street from their apartment on the grounds of the national cathedral and then traveled down to the heart of Georgetown for their outdoor ceremony. After the ceremony, guests were welcomed inside the historic Powerhouse which was originally constructed in 1917 by the D.C. Paper Manufacturing Company. With 30’ high ceilings, dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the C&O Canal, and a smokestack which rises through the building to a height of 150 feet, towering over the Georgetown skyline, it was a unique space for guests to mingle and explore and dance the night away.

From The Bride…Carter and I dated in high school and went to prom together, but decided to go our separate ways once it was time to go off to college. However, we always remained friends and stayed in touch over the years. While Carter moved back to Washington, D.C. (where we grew up), after college, I settled in New York. In December of 2010, we found ourselves back in D.C. over the holidays, catching up with a few friends from home over drinks, and we realized there might still be something there. Over the course of the next few months, we re-started our relationship from a distance, and in June of 2012 I moved back to D.C. to be with Carter. We were engaged on October 2, 2013.

Carter and I wanted to get married at home in D.C., and we were looking for a unique venue with a “party” atmosphere. Between the two of us, we had been to probably over 50 weddings, but it was still important to us to try to make our special day unique. The Powerhouse, the event space where our wedding took place, was the second venue we saw, but we knew immediately it was “the one.” The venue was relatively new as an event space, and right in the heart of Georgetown which we knew would be fun for out of town guests. I loved the exposed brick, the balcony over looking the dance floor, the huge smokestack running up one end of the interior and the overall industrial feel; the space could be dressed up any way we wanted it to be. There was also outdoor space right next to the venue, and right next to the C&O Canal, that we thought would be awesome for an outdoor ceremony.

After we found the space, we really relied on our wedding planner, Anne Kelley from Atrendy Wedding, for her thoughts as to how we could decorate (decorating does not come naturally!). We wanted the decor to be pretty simple, and I wanted it to reflect the spring season. We also kept our bridal party to just family members, so we did not have specific colors. We used cream colors, greys and green. Though we spent part of the day taking pictures in the rain, the clouds parted in time for our outdoor ceremony and everything came together beautifully!
