DIY Maryland Historic Homestead Wedding

This sweet bride’s sister got married just three months before, and believe it or not, she considered it a serious blessing. They planned side-by-side and DIYed just about every detail in this homestead affair. From the invites to the signage and every crafty moment in between, Abby Caldwell captured the whole shebang and Mitch And Lauren McClure documented the film you just mustn’t miss!

From The Bride…Thankfully, yes I’ll say it again, thankfully my sister got married around three months before I did! Susie and I loved being engaged around the same time and we couldn’t wait to switch roles as Maid of Honor (or in my sister’s case, Matron of Honor). We talked about plans, shared our excitement, and we danced the night away for the second time at my wedding in August.

Strangely, the process of getting ready for the big day was not stressful. I had my perfectionist moments, but ultimately there was no reason to stress. I had a team of family and friends with gifts I intended to use … and that I did. My mom was still in wedding planning mode and therefore, ready to take on anything with her fresh coordinating skills. She and I put together the wedding invitations, and my mother, with the help of my grandmother, also made the groom’s and groomsmen’s tie and bow ties. I had eleven superb bridesmaids who put together anything I asked, including my creative sister, Susie, who could decorate an entire wedding on her own (oh wait, she already did that for her own wedding). My sister drew by hand the signage around the venue including the cake pops sign and the “Find Your Seat” sign, made the delightfully tasty cake pops, and crafted the “K and A” letters on the sweetheart table. Susie also applied my make-up and placed each hair on my head in just the right spot. My bridesmaid, Dana, wrote out the place cards and made the “5:00 Ceremony” sign with the time schedule. The fabric buttons on the place cards were made by a friend, Katie Audy. My programs were designed and drawn by another bridesmaid, Emily. My mother-in-law, Michele Meyer, made the most incredible wedding cake – it was excellent in both taste and looks. Our delicious and beautifully displayed meal was catered by family friend, Leonardo Paras.

We can’t forget the lovely ceremony music that was provided by friends, Austin Sebek, Caleb Woo, and Quinton Armacost, and we couldn’t have danced at the reception without our friends, Adam Norris and John Hoobler, who provided the DJ services. I even got crafty myself and made the earrings worn by my bridesmaids, which matched the buttons on the place cards for the reception, and made the table numbers. So, I guess you could say it was fitting that I chose a historic homestead as my venue since my wedding was fashioned by family and friends: a homemade wedding if you will. When August 25th rolled around, the weather was gorgeous and the ribbons on the ceremony tree were lovely.

The perfectly peach and mint green colors flooded my eyes from the flowers to the bridesmaid dresses they so carefully coordinated from numerous shops. Kit and I met on either side of a wall to pray before the ceremony performed by his father, Ronald Meyer. An overwhelming spirit of joy pervaded as my guests all stood and sang, “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us.” The evening was filled with rejoicing, laughing, eating, drinking, and dancing. The entire day is worthy of remembering, however, this is the moment I most clearly remember: We had just made it through the sparklers and the car door shut after clearing away the paper, the screaming of our friends and family grew quieter as we turned out of the venue, and an abundance of gratitude immediately flooded over us both. We were overwhelmed in the best possible way. What made our wedding so beautiful wasn’t the decor or the nice breeze, but the hands that made those decorations and everyone that came to celebrate with us. God placed amazing people in our lives, and a good many of them surrounded us that day.
