From the beautiful Bride...Adam and I met in college in 2008. We lived across the street from each other and were friends for about 6 months before we decided that we wanted to be more. The truly great thing about our relationship and the way it formed is that during that year that we lived across the street from each other our groups of friends all became close which always makes things more fun. It also gives us a really strong support system of friends around us. We dated from that year forward until our wedding March 8 of this year. Adam is a Special Forces Medic so he was gone a lot for our dating years but we both feel like it made us a stronger couple in the end.
After 6 years of dating- four of which were long distance- we were VERY ready to tie the knot! My main vision and focus for our wedding was to include as many small and personal details as possible. Don't get me wrong, I think that florals and good food are super important, but I think it's the little unexpected things that people really take away and remember about a wedding. Besides that, I really wanted it to reflect who we are individually and as a couple. I am a very hands on person and am drawn to anything that lets me express myself creatively so naturally I decided to style/decorate my own wedding. Everyone said that I was insane but we pulled it off! Luckily, we had a really long engagement- a year and three months. During this time, I collected
all of the decor for the wedding at thrift stores, antique malls and estate sales. I did every centerpiece and reception area with items I had thrifted. I wanted the ceremony to be really intimate so we chose candles over flowers and I handmade the wax catchers. Knowing that myself and my family and close friends had all put our hard work into the day made it that much sweeter. It truly is one of those days that you wish you could relive over and over.
Some people think Adam and I are insane because we opened a clothing store two weeks after we returned from our honeymoon. For the month leading up to the wedding we were wrapping up planning and renovating a store at the same time. Our new store truly has been a labor of love just as our wedding was. It has been so fun to create this store concept together and execute it. I think that taught us quite a few lessons about how to truly work together and rely on each other. If I could give one piece of advice to future married couples it would be to rely on each other and really be interested and invested in what your partner is doing. It's not going to work if it's any other way. I also want to add another piece of advice my sister, Lucy, gave me about marriage based on her experience - it's important to rely on each other completely, but it's equally important to realize that there are certain things that you can only get from God. Realizing this takes a lot of pressure and resentment out of your marriage.
