From Sorella Muse PhotographyEmily and Katie’s vision for their wedding was “the last garden party of summer” and that’s exactly what their day felt like. They also knew their would be wildflowers and mason jars, two things that they both love. They wanted community to be at the heart of their wedding, as much as their love story. These are two women who deeply value and cherish community, and have built theirs in a thoughtful, genuine way. That sense of community was felt throughout their wedding, from a dear friend officiating to readings during the ceremony, to the most beautiful toasts from friends during the reception. And their schedule was created in such a way that the day unfolded at a slow and leisurely pace, nothing rushed or hurried, allowing for them to really spend time individually with their friends and family.

In the morning Emily and her sister Camille went to a flower farm where they have gone since they were little girls to pick flowers. The plan was to pick enough flowers from the cutting garden for three bouquets. But when we arrived, they explained that the cutting garden was closed for the season. What almost ended as a floral disaster was quickly rescued–when they found out it was for Emily’s wedding, they sent Emily and Camille to the display garden, and not only that, they gave all the flowers cut to her as a wedding present! It was such a lovely, sweet start to the day.

Emily got ready at her mother’s home in Amherst, doing her own make-up and hair, then slipping into a dress that was classic and simple. She wore a birdcage veil and an heirloom necklace. Both brides wore red shoes. Katie put the finishing touches to her J.Crew attire at the Lord Jeffrey Inn and then walked with her brother to the Amherst Woman’s Club, a historic house that served as a classic venue for their relaxed garden party wedding.

After an incredibly sweet first look on the wide lawn in front of the house, they mingled with guests before their ceremony started. At the end of the ceremony, Emily and Katie jumped the broom–an African American tradition that dates back to slavery, signifying a leap into a new life together.
