When these high-school sweeties tied the knot, they knew they wanted something really special. A bi-cultural affair with nods to both their heritages set in a modern art museum that’ll leave your jaw dropped. From the Bride… My husband and I met in high school so for us the wedding was “making it official” after feeling like a family for a long time. We wanted to celebrate that but also really wanted the day to be a celebration of our amazing friends and family who had seen us grow up together, as a couple and individually. Having the wedding feel like a big family dinner was the inspiration for a lot of the vibe of the wedding. We had long tables with low floral arrangements so everyone could talk, we had our brothers hold up the chuppah, we had cousins, nieces and nephews running around and Andrew’s childhood guitar teacher play guitar as I walked down the aisle.

We’re both from the Washington D.C. area but I am originally from Venezuela so we really wanted the event to be truly bi-cultural. The welcome bags were in Spanish and English, as were the programs, the flower girls signs and everything else we could think of! Our friends and families are also all about a dance party, so we brought a Venezuelan band – named Tartara – which kept people dancing all night.

The vision for the decoration was to have it feel elegant and intimate, with lots of eclectic and cool details. Our venue fit this perfectly. The Corcoran is such a classic DC venue, filled with marble columns and high ceilings, but also feels so young and modern because of the amazing modern art throughout the space. Because it’s such a special space we really wanted to highlight what was already really beautiful with our own touches.

The highlight of this effort was undoubtedly the chuppah. Having the wedding in a modern art gallery really inspired me to have a modern and nontraditional chuppah. I had seen different event decorations with paper flowers and had the idea of a chuppah made entirely of different kinds of white paper flowers. We also brought the concept into the dinner by adding it to the backs of our chairs during dinner. I can really say that walking down the aisle and seeing all of the people I love around me was amazing – and then looking up and seeing my soon-to-be husband under that chuppah was my favorite moment of the day.

Our vendors really helped me get the chic and eclectic look we wanted for the tables – we wanted it to feel clean and modern but also not feel like every table was the same. So, we had different types of white and gold plates throughout the tables, different table cloths, incorporated glass candlesticks, touches of gold, mercury glass and small candles. The final look throughout the long tables was incredible! Finally I added some other little details – gold table numbers, pom poms I found on Etsy for the dessert table, polka dot stirrers (also from Etsy), hot pink socks for the groomsmen (to match my beautiful raspberry bridesmaids), and raspberry colored Sofia champagne cans.

Abby, our photographer, and Sara, our wedding planner, were the ultimate partners. Beyond being amazing at what they do, and constantly in tune with our vision, they were sweet, supportive and thoughtful from day one. Abby and Sara – along with all of our other vendors – really helped to create a magical backdrop for an amazing and love-filled night.
