From the Bride…Fort Gibraltar was the first potential wedding venue we looked at and it was love at first sight! With its punched tin chandeliers, rustic hardwood floors and soothing cream-colored walls, the Fort was a perfect back drop for our shabby chic inspired décor. Considering that my creative imagination has been stretched since I was a small child through crafting with my mom and aunt, I knew that I would be hand-making much of the décor in order to make my vision come to life. I also knew that pink, being my favorite color for as long as I can remember, would definitely be in the forefront of my mind when making any design decisions. I decided early on that for my centerpieces, I would use large mason jars and that I wanted to incorporate burlap in a variety of places. I ended up finding a variety of colored floral fabrics one weekend and decided to use them to create the hearts on the burlap bunting banner as well as to decorate the mason jars. My mom, bridesmaid (Jen) and I spent an entire weekend cutting out flower fabric hearts, burlap strips and lace to then glue them onto the mason jars (using a hot glue gun). The entire kitchen was covered in glue and fabric scraps by the time we were done….To say the least, this was not something my Fiancee was prepared for when he arrived home! I’ve been obsessed with Etsy (an online handmade shop community) for a while now and found some great artists to create both our personal save-the-date card, which is a watercolor painting including Kris, myself and our venue, as well as our invitations, which incorporated our mason jar theme and of course pink! We found another artist on Etsy who created a guest book alternative consisting of a wooden tree with enough wooden leaves for each guest to sign, mounted on a canvas.
Kris and I both agreed from the beginning that we wanted the wedding to be really enjoyable for our guests and imagined a party-like atmosphere where everyone could mingle, drink our inspired martinis, eat great food and dance the night away. Kris and I are equally obsessed with candy and felt that it would be fitting to have a candy station with all of our favourite treats as the wedding favour to our guests. Connie and Angie at Fort Gibraltar helped transform our many kilograms of candy into a shabby chic dream-like arrangement that fit perfectly into the décor, complete with burlap, vintage glass windows and large glass jars. Kris and I used some left over flower fabric to create a wall piece to hang behind our candy table that turned out to be my favorite DIY project and its currently hanging in my home office, serving as a great reminder of our perfect wedding that turned out to be so us in every way. It was truly the best party we’ve ever thrown and likely ever will!
