Modern, DIY Wedding Alberta Wedding at Parkview Community Hall
This modern, handmade Alberta wedding is starting the new year on SMP Canada with the most stylish of bangs. And that's just how we like to start things over here. Styled to perfection by the lovely (and talented) Bride, planned by Mb&company and captured beautifully by Mat Simpson Photography Co - it goes without saying this gallery is one fabulous place to be today.
From Mat Simpson Photography Co....This wedding was filled with handmade goodness. The hung lighting was built and designed by a friend of the couple, Kevin Green. The glass terrarium centrepieces were built and designed by the bride's mother (each one took 13 hours to make!). All of the paper triangles used for the ceremony backdrop were handmade by the bride and friends. The table numbers were spray painted onto used books using stencils. The bride and groom had a collection of postcards from their travels which they had their guests write stories on in place of a guestbook. These postcards are now going to be framed to put up in the couple's home. In lieu of a traditional registry the bride and groom compiled a list of records they most wanted which they sent out to all guests. (They now have a very large collection!). They used public art as the main backdrop for their portrait sessions which I thought was super cool. The couple was also able to get their favourite band to play a live set at their wedding, starting with their first dance.
From the Bride...As a graphic designer, choosing one colour palette and narrowing down to one theme was probably the most difficult. I wanted to represent everything I’m about, while not forgetting there was another important person who deserved an equal say ;) In the end, I couldn’t narrow down my colour palette. I wanted them all. So it was a bit of a beast trying to ensure my bright pops of colour were balanced with neutrals and metallics. We didn’t want things to look like a rainbow or a kindergarten and the neutrals definitely helped that.
There was a strong geometric presence at our wedding as well as a love of vintage. Edmonton has a bit of a love affair with pyramids in its architecture and I have a bit of a triangle fetish (also they say it’s the strongest shape!). My mother handmade our centerpieces: glass terrariums, which I filled with succulents in tea cups (inherited from a family friend) and LED candles. These really brought the two elements of vintage and geometric shapes together. Nate and I spent many hours in front of the tv folding strips of paper to make bipyramids, which were later strung onto fishing line and then attached to a curtain rod to create our ceremony backdrop.
Probably my favourite moment was having our favourite local band (The Provincial Archive) play their set to start off our dance. We asked them to learn a new song for our first dance: 3 Rounds and a Sound by Blind Pilot, and it was perfect.
From the Groom...My favourite part of the wedding was seeing how everyone's hard work had created an amazing experience. Nicole and I had sat down months before the wedding to list our priorities which were good food, good music and an amazing party. Seeing the manifestation of all of those things was extremely fulfilling and a reminder of how hard working, talented and awesome our friends and family are.
