Art Nouveau Inspiration + DIY from Oak and the Owl

Earlier this week, we featured a gorgeous shoot from Oak & the Owl infused with all things Art Deco and now we’re circling back around for another dose of inspiration. This time, it’s a walk down the Art Nouveau lane filled with a fresh color palette, strung easter lilies and a modern twist on decor. (Plus a great take away DIY below!) From Oak and the Owl… While Art Deco is running rampant in design right now, we took inspiration from the Art Nouveau era for this shoot. We wanted a fresh and romantic feel for this shoot and used bright whites with touches of spring yellows and greens and paired them with silver for the table details. Using a gorgeous private estate, the grounds full of oversized palms and large grassy spaces were set for the ceremony and sweetheart table. Taking the idea of the Easter lily and running with it, lily garlands were hung from the lovely guest house for the ceremony and cascaded over the edges of the water fountain next to the sweetheart table. Individual lily heads were used to decorate the back of the Bride and Groom chairs (DIY to follow). Along with the garlands hung from the doorway, the columns were decorated with dogwood and cherry blossom branches, with spring bulb flowers like daffodils, tulips, narcissus, as well as cyclamen, and garden roses tucked in. Even the chandelier was dressed in garland and florals. Louis Ghost chairs were used to keep the look clean and airy. Lush and beautiful spring florals in a frosted mercury glass vase from the 1930’s was used for the centerpiece on the table which was set with clean white plates and silver charges, as well as sterling silver goblets. Lanterns full of flowers were placed in the trees flanking the table, which could be replaced with candlelight for a nighttime dinner. To give the bride’s gown a more vintage feel, it was paired with a 1920’s inspired beaded belt from Amanda Judge. Photography for the shoot was provided by a group of film wedding photographers in the bay area who use the Contax 645 camera. The natural look of film lent itself well to the overall aesthetic of the shoot and provided a great opportunity for some of the area’s talent to collaborate on this inspirational shoot.

Art Nouveau is a great design era for Brides who want a stylized yet classic and romantic wedding. The details may be vintage, but you can never go wrong with high end touches, lush and abundant florals, and clean but organic lines to your paper goods, cake, and other personalized touches that will make your wedding timeless.

Two Louis Ghost Chairs

Twenty Four Easter Lily Heads (silk flowers recommended)

Hot Glue

Take one lily and put a small dab of hot glue on the end that would connect to the stem. Attach it to the inside upper edge of the chair back. Then put a small dab of glue on the petal that lines up to the inside edge.

Take your next lily and again start with the glue on the end that would connect to the stem. Place that underneath the petal of the lily above and connect it to the chair. Then put a small dab of glue on the petal that lines up to the inside edge.

Continue this process until the lilies meet up with each other back at the top. When the event is over, just pull of the flowers and peel the glue off the chair. There should be no marks left on the ghost chair.
