Whenever a wedding designer ties the knot, you know it’s going to be good. But when that designer happens to be thee Kathleen Deery…well, there are no words. So instead of trying to muster up the adjectives to do it total justice, we’ve cleared today’s schedule to swoon this soiree from the inside out. That’s right, an entire day devoted to all things Kathleen and her other half, Dino. First stop — the inspiration that drove this wedding from idea to reality in a mere matter of months. And just sit tight, my dears, because we’ve got every “I do” detail coming up next.
From Kathleen Deery… You can imagine my surprise when the maître d approached our dinner table at the San Ysidro Ranch this past New Year’s with a silver cloche and a knowing smile. From the moment I met Dino almost four years earlier, I knew he was the real deal.
The best thing I did was have a short engagement because I needed to take care of my brides all summer long and for the rest of the year. Also, being in the business for 18 years allowed me to make a few choice phone calls to get everything and everyone in place for our big day. As both bride and designer, I was in the enviable position to bring my own design tastes and preferences into the wedding — and we immediately began.
My amazing planner, Laurie Arons, was responsible for allowing me to have the most fun I’ve ever had in one day. She’s also responsible for fixing me up with the groom himself. How’s that for full-service?
We knew we wanted an evening city wedding. We chose mid-May because we knew the flowers would be divine. Nothing said city wedding to me more than the intimate Chapel of Grace at Grace Cathedral. Plus, it’s been my long-time opinion that the most beautiful event space in all of San Francisco is the cocktail loggia and dining room at the Asian Art Museum.
Relaxed glamour was a phrase that guided us throughout the design process. Our vision was to blend our favorite elements of classic celebrations including bow-tied guests (bow tie not black tie), an 18-piece orchestra and white-gloved maître des holding silver trays with escort cards.
