Rain or shine, this wedding is stunning. So stunning, that anyone peeking at Julie Massie’s photos or Thomas Bowen’s film would never, ever guess it was pouring buckets mere minutes before the ceremony. But with Holly Chapple on hand to design the day, it’s really no wonder the rain didn’t dampen spirits in the slightest. From Julie Massie…Their love story began while they were each on teaching assignments in Mississippi, so it only seemed fitting to say their “I do’s” in the state where so many great memories were made. However, with the majority of their family and friends living in the Northeast, their parents urged them to marry nearby. So they made a compromise: If they couldn’t get married in Mississippi, they would bring Mississippi to Virginia. And that they did! Their designer, Holly Chapple, incorporated all of their favorite elements of Southern Charm, from the cotton plants lining the aisle and bits of cotton in the floral arrangements, and the southern style “comfort food,” to the officiant that was flown in from Mississippi, and the incredible ten-piece band pulsing out Southern Rock (their first dance was to ‘Black Water’ by Doobie Brothers, where a line “Mississippi moon won’t you keep on shining on me” erupted a cheer from their guests.) The decorations were stunning, but the threatening storm caused their ceremony to be moved to another location near shelter, and the massive amounts of wind blew around the decor. Five minutes before their ceremony, it was pouring buckets. Alice and Mike were all smiles, though, taking a cue from their Doobie Brothers song “Well if it rains, I don’t care, don’t make no difference to me…” They didn’t seem to notice the rain on their faces while saying their vows. It was a truly beautiful day nonetheless.
