From the Bride… Steve and I live in Los Angeles, but since we’re both from the East Coast we decided to have our wedding closer to our friends and family at home. We had both attended the Savannah College of Art & Design at the same time, although we didn’t meet each other until 2009 in California through mutual friends. We decided to get married in Savannah since the city has special meaning to both of us and is centrally located between our families (mine are in Maryland, his are in Florida and New York). Plus, who doesn’t love historic Savannah as a wedding destination?
When it came time to choosing a venue we were looking for a place with plenty of room and LOTS of character. We found the Georgia State Railroad Museum (formerly the “Roundhouse Railroad Museum”) online, visited the site a few weeks later, and fell in love with the space. The entire property is such a historic landmark to Savannah and had plenty of space for us to have the ceremony as well as the reception. Plus it had the rustic feel we were looking for. Steve and I knew we wanted a crafty wedding, but we also wanted it to be modern and fun through the use of bright colors and type, rather than a vintage feeling. Turquoise is one of our favorite colors, so we went with an ombre’ of blues and greens for the wedding palette.
The rest of planning fell into place pretty easily. I am a Fashion and Graphic Designer, so I had pretty specific ideas for our BIG DAY. Steve just let me run with it, giving input when and where he needed to. Since we were mostly paying for the wedding ourselves, we wanted to do as much of the planning and decor on our own to save money. We had a 14 month engagement and were drowning in fabric and kraft paper the entire time! From screen-printing dish cloths, to folding poof-balls (we made almost 300!), to building cake stands… we did it all and had a blast.
Since neither one of us is very religious, it was important that the ceremony represented us as a couple- laid back and FUN. We wrote our own ceremony which was short and personal. After the cocktail hour the guests were welcomed with champagne sorbet for the reception. The food- a Southern BBQ buffet- was excellent. We had a spread of Southern-flavored cupcakes for dessert: Red Velvet, Coconut, Banana, Apple Spice, and Peach Vanilla. Gifts (which included rock candy, shot glasses, Jordan almonds, and personalized napkins) were wrapped up in a berry basket. The DJ was incredible and the photo booth was a hit. We love to dance and drink, and that’s exactly what we did! It was a PARTY.
Everything couldn’t have happened without the help of our family and friends. My mom did all 75 floral arrangements scattered throughout the reception. Steve’s parents and family friends from New York hung all of our decorations that morning. A friend built and delivered our arbor from South Carolina. It was a wedding built from love and every detail represented us. All of our vendors were amazing and we couldn’t have imagined everything turning out any better. It really was the most perfect day ever.
