It’s no secret that we, the ladies behind SMP, have absolutely amazing jobs. But when Dove Hair asked us to play hair models as THE Mark Townsend tamed our locks into gorgeous, red carpet-worthy wedding do’s — we nearly fainted. I definitely fell out of my chair. I mean, THE Mark Townsend (the genius behind Jennifer Lawrence’s fabulous mane and too many A-listers to, well, list) was going to beautify our tresses using his products of choice from Dove Hair? It’s like we died and went to wedding beauty heaven. And trust me when I say it was precisely that dreamy. So it’s only fair we share the tips and tricks for taming your tresses, celebrity-style. First up: boho chic inspired. That effortless, yet elegant style we simply can’t stop swooning over — and now, thanks to the super-amazing tips from Mark and products from Dove Hair, it’s totally attainable…
From Mark Townsend… I first heard hairstyles described as Boho Chic when I started working with Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, who have been clients of mine for many years and who have started many a hair trend. This is that loose, undone, breezy, unfussy hair that every woman wants. Honestly, those girls really do have that hair with very little effort — but even for women who don’t, it’s pretty simple to achieve.
The natural movement and body of these hairstyles are flattering on absolutely everybody. (I’ve yet to meet a woman who doesn’t look and feel gorgeous in bedhead waves.) It’s perfect for women who don’t want to do big changes and like their hair down, but still want something a little bit elevated and different. In this case, Jess chose a fairytale-style Marchesa gown. I liked giving it a tiny bit of edge by taking the hair in that free-spirited boho direction.
1. Jess highlights her hair, which does tend to zap the moisture a bit, so we started with the Dove® Color Care Shampoo & Daily Treatment Conditioner, which nourishes colored hair to keep it luminous, soft and strong. I followed by applying a large dollop of the Dove® Style+Care Nourishing Curls Whipped Cream Mousse before blowing it dry with a round brush for volume and smoothness.
MARK’S TIP: If the word mousse gives you chills and makes you think of the crunchy, alcohol-based concoctions of the ’80s, I understand. But give it another shot. This version is really rich and creamy and loaded with moisturizers (so good for color-treated hair). Yum!
2. With a 1 1/2-inch curling iron held vertical, wrap sections of hair upwards from the ends. To keep the waves looking natural and prevent them from clinging together, alternate the sizes of your sections (I vary anywhere from one to three inches) and the direction you twist.
3. Work a dime-sized amount of the Dove® Color Care Leave On Conditioner between your palms, and rake hands through spirals from root to tip to break up the waves. You don’t want the curls stiff or overly polished.
4. Now we’re in the finishing stages. Back-comb one-inch sections of hair along the crown, mist with Dove® Refresh+Care Invigorating Dry Shampoo, and then tease again. The starch builds and creates volume — wait until you try; it really is almost magic. Finish with a generous blast of extra-hold hairspray.
MARK’S TIP: To tame pesky flyaways — or give bangs a little, ahem, guidance — mist a natural-bristle toothbrush with hairspray.
MARK’S TIP #2 (BONUS!): To really amp up the boho chic factor, we finished with a delicate wrap-style headband. If you want a similar effect, just choose something light and soft that won’t weigh down the hair. This isn’t the time for a major studded statement headband.
