This Chicago affair? It’s a standout. With it’s bold hues and creative touches it’s hard not to take notice of this perfectly curated party from Sweetchic Events. It ups the ante on Chicago chic, and we get to see it come to life through David Wittig’s gorgeous images (lucky us). It’s modern meets gorgeous pops of color, and Amy Beck Cake Design’s decadent dessert serves as the icing on the (literal and figurative) cake of this stunning soiree. See it all here.

From the Bride… We wanted our wedding to be artsy, creative, bold and above all, to be a representation of us. Early on, I adopted Hiroshige prints as our inspiration for our wedding day, and incorporated it all throughout our color scheme of royal blue, chartreuse, green and red. We had the blue and green flowers, a blue runner down the aisle, a modern cake with cascading and gradually fading blue flowers and even our macarons were selected for both color and taste from Vanille Patisserie. There were tons of DIY elements, mostly because I had something in mind that just wasn’t available through a vendor. I designed our invitations, programs and menus based on an asian fan motif, created our signing screen (which incorporated a few of the chosen Hiroshige prints on fabric and had a lattice for our guests to leave us notes), created and stenciled our table names from various “first’s” of our relationship (like the first basket ball game Nik ever took me to and the first opera I ever took Nik to) and put a little chartreuse description of the significance of the table name on each table (the red and chartreuse cardboard plates echoed the signature stamps on the Hiroshige prints).

Everything turned out great, and the DIY elements were done in time for our wedding, but I have to confess, we were putting together the brackets and gluing lattices on our Hiroshige signing screen on the day before the wedding, so we definitely cut it close! It was a labor of love, and in the end we were so happy everything came together the way it did. With all my perfectionist tendencies, I have to say it was great to give the control away to the event coordinator (she was so organized and the best coordinator we could have asked for!) and to let all of the vendors do what they do best (we loved our caterer). Sure there were a few changes – like one of our wedding photo shoot locations being commandeered by an Indian film shoot of all things, right outside our hotel, and improvising our first dance to make sure my train can be accounted for (ladies, please do take this into account when you are practicing your first dance!) but really, these are all great memories, and nothing I would wish differently. Everything being the whirlwind it was, I will remember the most glorious perfect mid-70’s weather in the middle of August, how I felt like a modern-day princess in my mermaid Angel Sanchez dress with the asymmetrical train, my mother’s beautiful Korean han-bok and all of her traditional accessories, how Nik made me teary with his vows, our perfect first dance to Adele’s rendition of Lovesong, and being amongst all the people we love. It was pure magic!
