On any Saturday when it just so happens to rain, I think about all the Brides out there. The ones who envisioned a day without a drop of rain or more than a sweet breeze. I think of them, and I hope with all my heart they have someone like Amanda Spencer of Spencer Special Events to turn their Plan B into perfection just like this gorgeous Bride. From the Bride…I always knew I wanted an outdoor, intimate, rustic wedding, and when my husband proposed in late December, I knew Hilton Head Island/ Bluffton, South Carolina was the place to celebrate our special day. Although I’m from Chesapeake, Virginia and spent much of my time in Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks growing up, they just didn’t have that same low country feel I was looking for. It just so happens my now husband spent his high school years living on Hilton Head Island and already knew much about the area which was a huge plus during the wedding planning process.
Within 2 weeks of our engagement we were headed down to South Carolina to look at venues. We had 5 locations we were set to visit that weekend, but after our second appointment in which we toured the grounds at the Colleton River Plantation Club we made the decision to end our venue search. Overhearing the couple during the appointment before us looking at the same wedding date may have contributed to our quick decision – but it was the right one! Colleton River Plantation is something hard to describe with words. The fifteen minute drive back to both the Dye and Nicklaus Clubhouses is quite surreal surrounded by oak trees, spanish moss, and few houses on the main road. Although both clubhouses are surrounded by the golf course, you can’t help but feel the peacefulness with the Colleton River and Parris Island in the distance. Within no time the plan was set – we were to get married on the lawn at the Dye Clubhouse with a tented reception on the lawn at the Nicklaus Clubhouse.
Who would have thought that at the end of October one of the most devastating hurricanes, what’s now known as Superstorm Sandy, would rear its ugly head and threaten our dream of an outdoor wedding? Not us. The days before the wedding were more than stressful, especially for me. Having to discuss “Plan B” with my fiance still in Charlotte was nauseating, but I knew Colleton’s fabulous event coordinator and our wedding planner would do their best to see our plan through.
After watching the weather forecast go from 20% rain, to 90%, and back to 40%, our wedding day finally came and we didn’t see ONE rain drop. Unfortunately, due to the wind we were forced to move our ceremony indoors, but it was just as special. Our talented florist coordinated custom made faux iron chapel windows constructed from a local blacksmith which served as the ceremony backdrop in what was hours before just an empty ballroom (we made the call at 11am on our wedding day to move the ceremony indoors). After being pronounced husband and wife, we headed out to the river for photos and were blessed with the most beautiful sunset we’ve ever seen. The clouds above us opened up within minutes, and every color in the rainbow transitioned in the sky treating our guests as they sipped cocktails on the clubhouse veranda.
Although our plan for an outdoor ceremony was altered, our vision of an intimate tented reception came to life and was more than we could have ever hoped for. The dance floor ceiling which consisted of glass orbs filled with blue sand and tea lights, along with crystal garland, hanging from chicken wire was certainly the focal point and looked absolutely amazing. The antique planter boxes I collected throughout the months before the wedding, tinted mason jars, and vibrant floral selection also helped give the reception that low country feel. The groomsman cake shaped like our 90lb. Fox Red Lab was also a big hit. All in all, everyone had a fabulous time, and people of all ages drank and danced the night away. This was especially important to us as it was not only a night to celebrate our new life together, but a display of appreciation to our closest friends and family for helping make us the people we are today. It truly was a day we will never forget along with all of the people who helped make it happen.
