After dating for just over 10 years, this adorable Adelaide duo decided to tie the knot at the historic and extremely beautiful Hotel Richmond, the perfect location for their "modern vintage" wedding. From the Bride... Aaron and I were married after having been together for just over 10 years. Hotel Richmond, a boutique, 1920s hotel situated in the heart of Adelaide’s iconic Rundle Mall, served as the foundation of our day, and we added our own touches to create a sophisticated and elegant wedding day with a modern vintage feel. We did not have a theme per say, rather we embraced the character of the hotel and the beautiful city that we live in. As we were married in May, which is late autumn here, we wanted to keep as much of the day indoors as possible in case of poor weather. I confess that I was secretly hoping for rain and cool temperatures! Alas, I was disappointed on the bad weather front, as we only had the smallest amount early on in the day. In order to keep the day as stress free as possible, we both stayed at the hotel the night before and got ready on-location. I got ready with my two bridesmaids and family members in the "Green Room," a small room featuring vintage furniture, chandeliers and large mirrors. I wore a couture gown in cream lace designed by Caleche Bridal House after having no luck finding the perfect dress elsewhere. Aaron prepared with his family and groomsmen on the fifth level in the more modern "Bridal Suite," overlooking all of Rundle Mall. The bridesmaids and I prepped for the day in floral robes handmade by my mother, while the boys got ready in "Game Over" shirts as a testament to Aaron’s nerdy side.
Keeping our guests comfortable was a priority for us, so people were not subjected to a long wait between the ceremony and reception, and we had a first look in the 1920s-inspired lounge (that also served as our reception room) about two hours before the ceremony. It was very special to see each other for the first time without the pressure of an added audience. I believe is also made both of us less nervous for the rest of the day. Following the first look, our bridal party joined us for photographs in the hotel, Rundle Mall, Adelaide Arcade and various locations on North Terrace including Adelaide University and the Police Barracks. We returned to the hotel for the ceremony in the "Balcony Room." The room was transformed with wooden chairs, an aisle lined with rose petals and candles and arrangements of willow branches with fairy lights and flowers. We also featured two small pug statues sitting on hardcover books to represent our two pug dogs who were unable to be present on the day and also my love of reading. I chose the books for Aaron’s "side" of the room to show his love of Seinfield and Star Wars! Following the ceremony we mingled briefly with guests over champagne and cheese platters before having some last photos taken in the reception room and outside of the hotel.
We served a variety of our favourite wines and cocktails. Good-quality local wines were important to us, and we spent a reasonable portion of our budget on this aspect of the day. We also served a very popular sangria and punch station where guests could add their favourite garnishes to either red or white sangria or Chambord punch. My mother made a variety of props for the photo booth, such as ties and flapper headbands and we sourced a variety of masks, boas and other accessories from various locations including budget stores, Etsy and second hand stores. Aaron and I made the various signs featured at the reception (including the cake, dessert bar, photo booth and cigar bar signs) ourselves, using the same font that featured on our invitations and then briefly baking tea-soaked paper to create an aged feel. We were extremely lucky with all of our vendors. Our photographer captured so many beautiful moments, my dress was everything I wanted, the cake was delicious and perfectly eclectic, and the florist and venue staff added extra details to an already-lovely venue to really make our day everything we had hoped for!
