From the Bride… As my father said in his speech, it was a special time and a special place. My husband, Ben, and I got married on my parent’s 40th wedding anniversary in the same town where my grandparents met over 75 years ago. Four generations of my mother’s family (including me) grew up spending summers in this rustic, simple, undeveloped area of the Cape. Bourne Farm is a magical place, with tall yellow grass blowing in the breeze, birds darting in and out of the trees along the property, and overlooking beautiful Crocker Pond. The barn was built in 1775, and some antique farm tools are still on display inside.
The entire feeling of our wedding day was casual, relaxed, personal and loving, with a ceremony officiated by a dear friend and family-style dinner at long wooden farm tables. Our custom-designed logo adorned our homemade ceremony programs and stemless wine glass favors (at each place setting with a “Fortune Fish” inside — an idea from one of our favorite NYC restaurants). Signs on driftwood we collected at the beach were painted and lovingly constructed by Ben’s dad.
Following the ceremony, Ben and I rowed away in a boat he had built with his father when he was a child; a nutshell pram named after Ben’s younger sister, Emily. After enjoying a few minutes of solitude (and a couple of glasses of champagne our wedding party had cleverly stashed in the boat), we joined our guests at cocktail hour outside the barn. Inside the barn, we had arranged guests’ place cards on antique wooden shutters and displayed photos of my parents’ wedding day and first few anniversaries. It was a perfect day that turned into a magical evening. As we walked around the property to take some pictures with our photographer, storm clouds approached and it began to sprinkle. The driver of the school bus we had hired to transport guests ran over to us with a bright red umbrella, and after a couple minutes, the light rain stopped and the clouds suddenly changed direction, drifting away to create a magnificent sunset.
