Bay Area Wedding from Jerry Yoon Photography + Soiree by Simone Lennon + Floral Theory
From the Bride... Bob and I met in Palo Alto while working at a start-up together in the summer of 2007. He was an East Coast boy from Boston, and I had just graduated from college in Long Beach. His witty cracks and colorful word choices (among them: maybs, probs, totes) got my attention. It was on our first date that I got the inkling that Bob was different from everyone else. I asked him the usual first date questions. "So what is your favorite movie quote?" Bob's answer really surprised me. He said "Well, I don't actually like reciting movie quotes. I would rather be originally funny." Upon hearing that, my brain just exploded. It was like a breath of fresh air and music to my ears. I had finally found someone who was insatiably interesting, hilarious, kind, and also loved to cook!
We got engaged the day after New Years Day of 2011. He got on one knee in our kitchen, the ring on the counter tied to the stem of a champagne glass with a white bow. And of course, I said 'Yes!' Neither of us wanted to plan a wedding from hundreds of miles away, so we set out to find a venue close to where we first met and still lived. Among our top priorities was finding a venue that would showcase San Francisco's glorious views of the bay and its very iconic bridge. The majority of our guests were coming from out-of-town (my family from Southern California and his from Boston) so for many of our guests, this would be their first impression. What we found at Cavallo Point was a one-stop-shop for the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception, as well as an opportunity to house all our out of town guests on-site, all while providing an incredible view.
As we considered decor, it was all about finding a motif that could seamlessly blend into Cavallo Point's existing architecture, which has a bit of a Southern-country look to it. Naturally, we also wanted to infuse the wedding with our own personalities. We're laid-back people, and we like clean lines and natural beauty — nothing too forced or fussy. With the help of our brilliant wedding coordinator and florist, we created a design scheme that was simple, elegant, and timeless. Bob is what I would describe as "a man's man" so we made sure not to go too overboard with frills and lace. There was a ruggedness to the outdoor cocktail area and reception space using exposed dark wood tables, rectangular wooden flower vases, and giant wine barrels. To complement that, we used white hydrangeas and peachy-pink David Austin roses, floating candles, and sheer cheesecloth runners to reflect his female counterpart (me!).
When the actual day came, we were blessed with some of the best June weather in history. Most people know that in the summer, its not uncommon for the Bay area to be covered in a thick layer of fog. The man upstairs must have been looking out for us because that day, there was not a cloud in the sky. When the chapel doors opened and I saw the perfect rows of flower petals along the aisle, the ethereal tulle backdrop, and all those faces of people I love looking back at me, I felt like maybe I had just died and this is what its like to go to heaven. It was the most surreal moment I've ever experienced. I really couldn't have imagined a better day.
