Atlanta Wedding at The Biltmore Ballrooms from Sophia Barrett Studios

This wedding from Sophia Barrett Studios simply has me beside myself. It’s infused with so much pretty, so many perfectly sophisticated details styled by ellyB events – yet it also incorporates so many lovely nods to this couple, their upbringing and their cherished culture. Basically it’s wedding perfection, and it’s all dancing around in this completely stunning full gallery of images.

From the Bride… Our wedding reflected just who we are: sweet urban sophisticates in love with each other and family. Michael and I are southern-raised (although currently dwelling in New York City) and thrive in city life. We grew up in a culture of formal southern cotillions, beautillions and holiday affairs, and I would like to think that one day our children and grandchildren will look back at us the way we look back at the urban hipsters of the Harlem Renaissance. So we infused these familiar, personal and culturally-signficant elements into our special day…

The music: neo-soul, jazz and R&B classics (opting for the tunes of, for example, Jill Scott for my bridal march, Goapele for the bridal party, John Coltrane for pre-ceremony music, Musiq Soulchild for the groom’s entrance and a jazz band for cocktail hour). The color palette: blush, beige and cream; reminiscent of the ballet (I love the Alvin Ailey Company and chose flowing crinkled chiffon dresses for the bridesmaids, blush satin ribbons for my corset and soft ballet ruffles for my train). The wedding lineage table: images of the unions of our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents. Jumping the broom: a historical wedding tradition for African-American couples. The flowers: simple and soft hydrangeas, garden roses, orchids and dahlias. The tuxedos: modern with a flair of the “old world” with suspenders and bowties. We also threw in King and Queen chairs at the estate table and a few black and white images for a small taste of what our wedding will look like to our children in 50 years.
