From the Groom... We were determined to make the planning process as laid-back and enjoyable as possible. The venue was a cozy Italian restaurant in a Victorian-era industrial building that was loaded with atmosphere. We felt as though half the work was done already, but we needed to add a layer of personal flair. We're strongly influenced by modern Scandinavian design and I think that's reflected in the final result: inviting and rustic, but still minimal and modern. A lot of our inspiration came from interior staging photos at emmas designblogg. Virtually all of our decor was DIY, which felt like a series of fun craft projects.
Our hunt for materials took us all over the province, from antiques shops in the city to small-town vintage barn sales. We collected old mason jars to hold flowers and candles, picture frames, stained wooden wine boxes, old books, retro cameras, burlap, twine and a metal bird cage for cards. We set up a Polaroid camera table for guests to use. To hang the photos, we provided little wooden clips and some large picture frames wrapped in twine. We created writing surfaces with chalkboard paint for signs.
One of our best decisions was to get family involved. We asked my aunt to bake pies using berries that my wife's family brought from Newfoundland. We served the pies instead of cake on assorted pie platters and with hand-stamped serviettes. We entrusted my cousin, who runs a vintage clothing business, with the task of staging and styling the venue using our DIY and found objects on the morning of the wedding. We didn't get to see it until the day of our wedding at the same time as our guests, and we were blown away. Her interpretation was perfect, and it really made our day.
