From the Bride... Daniel and I met in Washington, DC shortly after I moved there at a wonderful church downtown called Luther Place. We got married in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, at the church I grew up in, and our reception was along the creek I played and swam in as a child. We brought our pastor down from DC to officiate. Our vision for the day was inspired by the holiday (Cinco de Mayo) and our Southern surroundings. Many of our guests traveled from very far (my husband is from Minnesota, and we live in DC), so our main goal was to be as welcoming and hospitable as possible (and to show off my gorgeous hometown). Many had never been to Charleston before, so we wanted to make sure it was good and low country-inspired, too. The Creek Club was the perfect spot: on the water with huge wrap-around porch and an excellent caterer that served us local shrimp and grits, baked grouper and braised duck. We had old Charleston trolleys transport guests to and from their hotels, the church and the reception. Making everything as easy as possible for guests was a top priority.
The invitation was very important to us and we wanted to have fun with it and set the tone for a casual-elegant, affair. We both love paper goods and letterpress, so we went with a design inspired by the low country and papel picado, a Mexican paper cut-out banner often displayed at weddings and celebrations, to tie in the Cinco de Mayo theme. After listening to our ideas, our brilliant stationer, Heather, custom-designed the invite suite with a series of flags that depicted our names, the date of our wedding and "Charleston" in each of three flags — she even sneaked the South Carolina state flag's palmetto tree and a silhouette of the church in there! Design elements from the invitation made their way onto the cakes, which we kept simple in white and yellow (why have one cake when you can have three?). The hand-painted toasting glasses were bought by my mother in Zagred, the former capital of Yugoslavia in 1986. They came out of the china cabinet for the first time in 20 years for the occasion. :) For my "something borrowed," I wore my great grandmother's engagement ring on my pinky (she had tiny fingers!) and carried a lace handkerchief from my maid of honor that has been in quite a few weddings.
Music was another big part of our day. Our first dance was to Tina Turner's "Simply the Best," and our respective dances with our parents were both Beatles covers. We are a family of musicians, so my brother sang and played clarinet while his partner played piano, and my former oboe instructor lent her talents as well. At the reception, the best man, a composer, presented his mash-up of Prince and Hootie — the best native talents from Minnesota and South Carolina, respectively. Oh, and our signature drink, which was in guests' hands before they walked in the building, was a margarita — what else?
