From the Bride… Scott and I were engaged in February and couldn’t wait to get married, so we picked a date six months later in August before the school year started (Scott is in medical school, and I’m a high school teacher). It was a whirlwind experience, but we had the time of our lives. I began planning the wedding while living in Richmond, Virginia, and picked a venue in Roswell, Georgia, near where we both grew up. My mom was a huge help in scouting out the venues in the area. Once we found Kimball Hall, we knew it was perfect for us. Over the summer I was able to move home for a couple months to plan the wedding while Scott was away at Naval officer training. With Scott and I being apart for the two months leading up to the wedding, it made planning more challenging, but it made the whole experience that much more exciting when were finally reunited for the wedding.
Our overall concept was a casual, Southern style event with some traditional components. Our color scheme of yellow and gray also played an important role. This concept and color scheme was the inspiration for many of the details. Kimball Hall is a beautiful, rustic, Southern home with inviting character and was our ideal setting. The floral arrangements of white, yellow, and peach flowers were accented with a yellow “pop” from lemon centerpieces. My mother’s hand-made gray table runners added a cozy, creative feel and rounded out the traditional silver table decorations. We made several of the decorations for the event by hand, including the table numbers in antique frames, the seating charts in old window-panes and unique programs for the ceremony. The groomsmen wore a more casual, cobalt gray suit with striped, yellow ties. The bridesmaids wore a lighter, ash gray dress of their choosing with fun yellow shoes. Our bouquets had splashes of yellow and white. As a special detail, Scott and I each had a feather — one in my bouquet and his boutonnière. Birds of a feather fly together!
Our guests were greeted at the reception with a hand-written chalkboard note from us and a signature cocktail. We served adult Arnold Palmers with sweet tea vodka and lemonade in mason jars. Our menu was deliciously prepared by Avalon Catering and offered classy, Southern fare. Our cake was a simple tiered cake with ruffled, white butter cream frosting, to complement the ruffles in my dress. Our cake topper was two small, handmade, wire birds (I love birds!). For dessert, we did not offer a groom’s cake. Instead, we had an ice-cream sundae bar that was a huge hit. To tie in the theme, there were plenty of bright yellow candies and sprinkles for the guests to top their sundaes with. It was such an amazing day. Our friend and minister, Dave Lewis, delivered a beautiful, heartfelt ceremony. The reception was memorable and fun. We received so many compliments from friends and family; everyone had a great time. Our photographer, Jacquie Rives, did an amazing job and has captured some breathtaking memories for us. In the end, though, what matters most, is that this wonderful day marks the beginning of our lives together… our lifelong adventure. We could not be happier.
