From the Bride… We tried to keep up with the exterior of our venue, which was mission style, and keep a Spanish feel going throughout the night. Family is very important to both of us, so we wanted to incorporate a lot of personal details into the day that would encompass this. At our sign-in table, we had wedding photos displayed of our parents and grandparents. We also recently lost my grandmother “Mamama Pauline” during our engagement year, so we paid tribute to her by naming one of our peach sangria signature drink “Peachy Pauline” after her.
One decoration from the evening that particularly stood out was the black and white personalized subway sign displaying our names and wedding day info. It was a gift from our coordinator and a definite favorite piece of all the guests. Another special part of the design would be our cigar lounge. It was a favorite gathering spot for many of the guests to take a break from dancing, spark up a cigar and sip some cognac. It was a last-minute decision and a big hit! Also, we incorporated a late night snack of Spanish “churros con chocolate,” a common treat in Spain and a great tie-in to the rest of our Spanish theme.
We did a first look, and although I was originally opposed to it, timing forced us to do it. It ended up being such a special private moment between the two of us, and I believe it helped calm our nerves before walking down the aisle. During our ceremony, my husband singed his hair when lighting the unity candle! It wasn’t obvious to our guests when it happened and didn’t do any damage, thank goodness, but is definitely something we continue to crack up about. My dad wrote a song for our first dance. It was so special to dance with him to his own words. We did a grand exit through fireworks, which was awesome, but even better were the cans tied to the back of our get-away car, which had been saved from my parents wedding!
