From the Bride... Jeff and I had been together about three years, and I knew we were on the same page in terms of getting married, so I was just waiting for him to pop the question. Valentines Day came and went. Our anniversary came and went. Still no ring. Where was it? When was it going to happen? How was he going to do it? I was going a little crazy, I’ll admit. Then, one weekend, I woke up to find Jeff waiting with his made-from-scratch Nutella pancakes with fresh fruit and flowers — and I knew something amazing was happening. He followed breakfast in bed with a sweet serenade, singing 'First Day of My Life' by Bright Eyes. I think he I think he was so nervous about proposing that he messed up the words! But it didn’t matter — he could have been singing the alphabet and I would still have loved every minute of it. Finally, he put down his guitar, got down on one knee, and asked, "Will you marry me?" I said yes (of course!) and thus began a crazy year of planning a wedding for 300 people that reflected who we are and all that we love.
As a graphic designer, Jeff designed all our wedding stationery himself. His directions were "Think Bollywood Circus" and "No pastels!" We carried the bright colors and elephant theme that he came up with into the rest of our wedding decor to create a day that was full of rich, vibrant, glittering details. I scoured Toronto's Little India, looking for the perfect silk sarees for the bridesmaids, and I loved the contrast of seeing them next to the groomsmen in their black suits. Even some of Jeff's family (including his 1-year-old nieces!) got into the fun, getting dressed up in Indian clothes! We had a Humanist ceremony and asked our friends and family to participate with readings from both Christianity and Hinduism. I'm not a big fan of traditional guestbooks — I never know what to write that I didn't already say in my card — so the elephant-shaped mini-guestbooks we found at Pier 1 were a perfect fit. Jeff and I discovered macarons on a trip to France together and decided to give home-made ones away as favors. Jeff created a macaron inspired by Indian sweets and a chocolate-hazelnut macaron (thanks to my Nutella addiction), and we somehow churned out 600 of them in the week before our wedding. Favorite moments for me were seeing each other all dressed up for the first time and seeing our friends make their Bollywood dance debut at our reception with a performance that brought down the house! We chose "First Day of My Life" as our first dance song, and I will never forget hearing it play and soaking up how beautiful everything around us looked as we danced. It really felt like the first day of a fantastic new adventure together.
