I’m pretty sure this next wedding will take your breath away with all its stunning images by the super talented Three Winks Studio. This wedding is definitely the kind that you dream about when you’re a little girl…you know the one where you’re wearing a long, lace veil, your hair is braided just so, your groom has a super cute bow tie on and you have a super cool cake with an even cooler topper. From the Bride… Back in June, I moved from the East Village to San Francisco. Justin stayed in NYC, but he proposed a month later while we were on vacation in Istanbul with a gorgeous vintage Art Deco ring. He’s LDS, so living together before marriage wasn’t an option, and we decided to get married in New York in November. That gave us four months to plan a wedding from across the country!
We’re both swing dancers — it’s how we met — and really wanted to throw a dance. My dream venue was one of the gorgeous Beaux Arts mansions of old New York — I loved the idea of the simple elegance of dark wood, a few richly-colored flowers and candlelight. We used vintage silver from the 1930s and 1940s that I’d collected over the years to make the space more “us.” A jewelry box and breadbasket were repurposed to hold favors, and a tiny catch-all basket was perfect for the flower girl’s petals. It’s fun to see them around our home now as a reminder of our celebration. Since our planning period was so short, I relied very heavily on eBay and Etsy. I made my birdcage veil and designed my vintage-lace mantilla. The grey reception dress was made by a very talented friend who is currently a student at FIT — I can’t wait to wear it again!
The paper crafts were all DIY. Justin and I are both tech nerds, and we designed an icon set and infographic representing our relationship — places we’ve visited, milestone moments, etc. We had the icons made into rubber stamps and used them on our invitations, programs and place cards. Our guestbook was a Moleskine sketchbook that we decorated with our engagement photos, and the “photo booth” was an iPad running the PhotoBooth app. We also DIY’ed the pomander balls decorating the ceremony room, heart-shaped toss confetti, traditional Italian almond favors and bridesmaids’ bouquets.
If you’re running on a tight schedule, there are certain things you’re going to miss out on — you can’t really look at a lot of venues or do a bunch of tastings (I did none). So I stopped worrying about “perfect” and just started looking for vendors who would do an awesome job. Finding people who will work with you over email and having a good month-of coordinator is key. Some things will go wrong — for example, our florist canceled three weeks before. But the short deadline was a constant reminder that I’d be married to my best friend in four quick months! And on the actual wedding day, everything was absolutely wonderful — our first dance was my favorite part. We just celebrated four months of marriage by finally going on a honeymoon — climbing Mount Kilimanjaro! I’m blissfully happy, so blessed and couldn’t be more in love.
