From The Wedding PlannersThe wedding of Dr. Kaitlyn Turnball and Dr. Brian Siu took place at the Steam Whistle Brewery, housed in an old railway roundhouse, in the heart of Toronto. The guests’ first glimpse of the wedding was a “Save the Date” coaster mailed to them which read “Love is Brewing.” The bride and groom both got ready at the historic Fairmont Royal York Hotel where they had their “First Look,” and then they, along with their wedding party, walked the five city blocks to the roundhouse for their wedding and reception. With the CN Tower as their backdrop, wood signs pointed guests to the rustic box car, where the couple said “I do.”

I’ve worked with this wonderful couple for the past year and half to plan their wedding and help them infuse their personalities into their day. They knew they wanted a historic venue, and it was a happy coincidence that Steam Whistle is the groom’s favourite brew. From the rustic furniture and clothesline seating chart, to the cootie-catchers and fairy wands, this gorgeous, rustic wedding was filled with details hand-made by the bride. When I asked her how she was able to get everything done, she told me she just did things at the hospital between babies being born. At one point, she even had the surgeon groom sewing bunting banner on the place cards.

There was no shortage of fun for the guests who travelled from all points of Canada, the U.S. and even as far as Hong Kong. Katie and Brian’s dog, Ralph, was their ring bearer, there was a photo booth to get some silly in, tours of the brewery, a live band that included the bride’s father, a candy buffet and a late-night snack of gourmet grilled cheese and sweet potato frites. At one point, Katie’s former university cheerleading squad hoisted her up on the dance floor. Guests didn’t want to leave, so the venue stayed open later for them. There was so much love, laughter and joy at Katie and Brian’s wedding — a perfect testament to the beautiful couple that they are.
