From the Bride… I actually met Jordan through my ex-boyfriend (they were best friends at the time) and when we broke up he and I stayed in touch on Myspace. After about a year of that, we started spending time together as friends, and in two weeks we developed deeper feelings for each other. We were married six weeks after making things “official, ” and eloped when we were both 19. We’ve never been a conventional couple! Our vow renewal was exactly on our two-year wedding anniversary. It was an inspired expression of the love we have for each other and for our friends and family.
Our vow renewal was at the Hillside Gardens in Colorado Springs, Colorado. We scoured the state looking for our perfect venue; we looked at about 10 in person that stood out online. Ultimately I wanted an outdoor space that was not typical, not perfectly manicured or expected, but that felt eclectic and unusual. I saw many gardens with white arches wrapped in vines and pink roses planted in the shape of hearts, but that wasn’t what I was looking for. The Hillside Gardens turned out to be the perfect relaxed, yet sophisticated, space. The indoor/outdoor reception area with a view of the Rockies was a huge draw too! When I first started looking for wedding inspiration, I found that I was always drawn to vintage style events. They had a lot of texture and interest. I wanted to keep it light and romantic. We tried to keep a balance between eclectic vintage style and some more traditional wedding components. We didn’t want things to get too cluttered with the vintage décor, so we kept other aspects more clean and uniform. It was also important to keep a natural element, which we did by using lots of flowers and having a mostly outdoor venue. The end result was a soft, vintage, almost rustic elegance.
Flowers were a HUGE part of our event, and I spent more time working on them than probably any other part of the vow renewal. The flowers really determined our color palette for the entire event. I chose each type of flower and its color and changed my mind millions of times! I accompanied my florist to the wholesale market a couple of times to be sure I liked everything I had chosen in person. I also sent her hundreds of inspiration photos throughout the year of planning that I collected from wedding blogs, and we met about ten times before the actual event to discuss various changes. We even had two mock-ups! In the end, it was so worth it, because we got exactly what we wanted. I believe I ultimately chose close to 30 different flowers and greens for our reception arrangements and five or six for my bouquet, which I wanted to keep more simple and traditional.
One of the very special parts of our wedding was when I revealed to my husband the surprise engraving on his ring following our ceremony. We had sneaked away for some alone time to relax and get ready for the reception in a cottage on the venue property, and it was so touching to see his reaction when I told him to take off his ring and look at it. I think he almost cried! It was a wonderful moment.
