From the Bride… Both Sean and I have similar taste and agreed on a relaxed, rustic country chic style. We decided on having our wedding at my parents place in Plainfield, Massachusetts. This is very sacred place in my family that has been in my mom’s family since the 1930s. Two small rustic cabins used to sit on the property, where I have many summer memories with my family. The two cabins were in rough shape and when my parents moved out to New England from Oregon, they had the plan to make this place their retirement spot and a nice place for family and friends to always visit. During all of 2010 and part of 2011, construction was going on, and it finished up beautifully.
Since we both love doing crafts, making many of the pieces for our wedding felt very satisfying. Sean built this beautiful birch arbor from fallen birch pieces on our property in Plainfield. We bought 15 vases, one for each table, and Sean made these gorgeous birch vases. He also whipped up two perfect birch flower girl baskets. There is a running joke in our family that he was the Martha Stewart of the woods! I used burlap for table runners and we placed mason jars, mugs and local Vermont maple syrups at each seat for gifts. My dad showcased his home-brewing skills, and it was a major hit with our family and friends. A friend and I made a bundle of signs from salvaged wood and we staggered them around the property. Our plates on the table have an awesome story behind them. A year before our wedding, Sean was browsing the free section on Craigslist and stumbled upon an ad for a load of collected vintage plates used at a wedding. We emailed as fast as we could, but there had been many replies to this ad, all from couples planning their weddings! The person who wrote the ad decided to have us all communicate and figure out a way that each couple could use them and pass them on. We were the last couple in the line up, and we used those plates, plus I collected around 40 of them from many trips to second hand stores. They looked amazing on the tables with all the different designs and colors, it really added to the vintage flair we wanted. Since then, we have already passed those plates on to another couple the same way we came across them!
Planning our ceremony was the most important part to us, so we added many personal touches, and it ended up being very heartfelt. Our friend from Vermont who is an Interfaith Minister performed our ceremony. It was perfect because she knows us so well. Her husband is a musician and sang “Today” by Josh Radin as I walked down the aisle. We used a mix of chairs and hay bales for seating. We stood in front of the arbor and looked out on the Plainfield Pond. Sean’s older brother did a reading from the Velveteen Rabbit. Sean and I both wrote our vows to each other. Once we were pronounced Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, we skipped down the aisle as our guests tossed petals and sang “One Love” by Bob Marley. We proceeded down to the edge of the pond to greet our family and friends in a receiving line who had traveled from all over to be with us. The best part of our receiving line was a bowl of river rocks we had gathered from the Green River in Vermont that we live near — people gave us their wish and tossed a river rock into our beloved Plainfield pond. All the hard work Sean and I put into creating our special day was worth it. We both are blessed with supportive and creative families. Everything down from our wedding website, save the dates, invitations and ceremony were carefully and thoughtfully planned with all our hearts. It was gratifying and fulfilling to see it come into play so beautifully for a memory that will always be in our hearts.
