I think I might have just found my most favorite ceremony venue of all time. The intimate barn with chandeliers dripping from white-washed beams is the most perfect example of rustic glam I’ve ever seen. Somehow this couple managed to make this already beautiful setting that much more gorgeous with lace runners, brass centerpieces and mismatched vintage china. From the Bride… We always knew we wanted to get married on Whidbey Island. We were engaged at Deception Pass, so it made sense for us to have our wedding there and we were excited to bring our friends and family to such an incredibly beautiful and special place. A lot of our inspiration came from the wedding venue itself. When we visited The Wayfarer, a 100-year-old farm on Whidbey Island, we fell in love with the feel of the crisp, clean air, beautiful orchard, chandeliers hanging from trees, white-washed barns, string lights, farm tables, perfectly mismatched chairs and an overall vintage feel, which coincidentally matched our own stye and home decor! When we first started planning our wedding we knew that there were two really important things that we wanted to capture in the day. We wanted to not lose sight of who we are and what we love, as well as pay tribute to those close to us who have been there as examples of happy relationships, as well as support systems. We kept our guest list as small as possible so that we would not compromise any detail.
Right away we hit it off with Kelly, the wedding planner at The Wayfarer, and knew we would be friends even after our wedding. It helped that she and I have such similar taste, style and a love for all things vintage! Through a collaborative effort (and hundreds of emails) between Kelly and me, we were able to bring our “vintage, romantic, elegant” wedding to a reality, utilizing The Wayfarer’s “collection” of mirrors, frames, bicycles and Polaroid cameras, to name a few things. The turquoise blue pick-up truck was so much fun to use as a prop. In the orchard, the long farm table with mismatched chairs was set with a lace runner, carefully handpicked china (in different colors and hues) with silver flatware, and vintage brass candelabras topped with dahlias. Candle-lit chandeliers twinkled from the trees above and the voice of Ella Fitzgerald coming from the record player hung on the breeze. If it sounds dreamy, it’s because it was!
The handkerchief invitations were found in the basement of my husband’s aunt’s home. The box had contained her father’s “samples” from when he worked in imports, and we knew that using them as the invitations would accurately set the tone for the day. We had them screen-printed at a local shop. We really wanted our wedding day to be a celebration of love and commitment, not just between us, but for all of our guests. We especially wanted to remind the married couples of the promises they made to each other on their day. We discretely collected pictures of each of our married guests on their wedding day and displayed them in frames at the guest sign-in table. It was great to see the mustaches and bridal styles of the past! Additionally, they were a huge hit and great conversation starters. Also, we wanted to utilize as many Whidbey Island vendors as possible to keep things local. Flowers from a farm down the road. Coffee beans from a local roaster were tied with thank you notes as the favors. The beer kegs held a custom blend from a small Langley brewery, and an amazing all-organic, locally-sourced feast was served by Chef Jess. Our officiant couldn’t have been closer, as we were married by Rich, the owner of the farm.
