Their infectious smiles and cheerful attitudes have totally won me over and that goes for every single detail of their bright and beautiful wedding! From the bride… The things we love to do, eat, and experience inspired our wedding style. We love playing games (Nabil’s proposal was an online scavenger hunt he created around the city before finally ending up at Bryant Park). We love to laugh and have fun — there’s never a dull moment. The Invisible Dog name in and of itself embraces that idea. We wanted to bring different cultures and people together and have a celebration that everyone (from kids to elders) would enjoy and remember. We strove to make our wedding feel homey and personal in many ways — from our personalized wedding invitations made by my brother and homemade pom poms/pinwheels to handwritten signs and personalized trivia cards. Our guests could look around and see all the details and understand how they embodied us. We are big foodies and love to eat. We believe that food creates experiences and so the food we chose helped to capture not only favorite foods but also foods that bring back memories. Some of our hor d’oeuvres were specially designed for us, for example one was a pan-fried taro cake, a typical chinese dim sum food we love. We also had two Mr. cocktails and two Mrs. cocktails that showcase our favorite drinks. The names that were made up for them are either our nicknames by our friends, nicknames for each other, or characterize a sentiment. Our seating cards hanging on the bottles had a ginger limeade inside that Crave created for us since that’s our favorite summer time drink.
The officiant was our close friend Shu-ping, who we asked to become an officiant just for our wedding. Not only did he deliver an amazing ceremony full of witty remarks, quotes, and metaphors, but also even included lines from Finding Nemo just to make us laugh and smile because they’re my favorite parts. What made the ceremony something a little different was that we asked Shu-ping to use an iPad instead of a book of some sort. This helped to characterize Nabil (geek/techy personality), as well as showcase our wedding as something a little different and fun. When I told my elementary school students about that, some joked and asked if Shu-ping was playing Angry Birds during the wedding. Our vows were written by ourselves so those were a surprise to read to one another. I think the photos really captured the raw emotions that came from listening to them for the first time. We also had hand-punched confetti for everyone to throw at the end.
My friend Jen made two types of cookies — chocolate chip and shortbread (Nabil’s favorite kinds). I made the other two treats — double chocolate walnut biscotti and compost cookies (my personal favorites). Our cake was a marble cake — yellow to represent me being Asian, brown to represent Nabil being Bangladeshi and marbled to show how we mix together. We had a flash mob that we specifically choreographed by my good friend Lauren Yasuda Rainey. She even created a Youtube video of herself in order to send it to all those participating so that we could all learn the dance. We used the photographs taken with a polaroid camera as our guest sign in book. Dinner was served family style to get people to interact with one another and feel like a true family. This was also reinforced by having long tables all connected to one another, having trivia cards about us on the tables, and having table signs that shared snippets of our relationship.
