From the bride… Our wedding was everything I hoped it would be, and more. Growing up, I was not the kind of girl who dreamed about her wedding and had all the details picked out even before meeting Mr. Right. Yet when my then-boyfriend proposed, my mind immediately went to our family ranch, a friendly and familiar place that I grew up visiting. In my early years, my parents and sisters and I would pile in the car and head up to Wheeler, a town virtually unmarked on the map. We would meet my sweet Grandmommie there, who always had the house perfectly ready for us. You see, the house had been built by her grandparents upon their immigration from Denmark and has been in the family ever since. Vacations at the ranch always went something like this: endless board games, playing in the orchard, walking up and down “Chalk Rock Hill” — a nod to simpler times. Though Grandmommie has since passed away, I could feel her presence in every aspect of the wedding… most notably, the perfect sunset that opened up during our exchange of vows after days and days of rain.
My husband didn’t grow up visiting Wheeler and had only been there once before our engagement. One Christmas while we were dating, he gave me a pencil drawing he commissioned of the house. I still occasionally get teary when I pass by it hanging in the hall — he knew how important that cozy little house was to me. I am overjoyed that we were married together right there beside it, and that my husband is now bound to it in the same special way that I have always been.
The decorations were simple, perfectly fitting the “country chic” look and feel of the place. Our wedding coordinator and family friend, Ron Rives, worked tirelessly to put everything together… and it showed. Uplighting on the yard’s trees showcased the 100-year old beauties, while white picture frames added interest hanging on the trunk of one. Yellow mums filled the lawn and porch of the ranch, a delicate contrast to the brown fall landscape surrounding them. A variety of vintage glass vases adorned the dinner tables, featuring florals such as “billy balls,” succulents, craspedia, sabiosa pods, white lizianthus, dusty miller and calendula.
