From the Bride… Jaryd and I met at a café in Washington D.C., where we quickly identified our mutual love of coffee and jazz music. We began dating shortly thereafter, and when it came time to plan our wedding last year, we knew coffee and jazz would play a prominent role in our wedding. We also knew we wanted to keep the atmosphere casual for our guests. Other influences that inspired our wedding were my love for the ocean (I grew up in New England) and Jaryd’s love for the beautiful countryside (he grew up in the Mountain West).

In keeping with Woodlawn’s country estate feel, Jaryd and I opted for a wedding theme that invoked a feeling of rustic elegance. I am an inveterate DIYer, and I’ve even gotten Jaryd in on the fun. (Last year, we built our own reclaimed wood table.) With a set budget and over a year to plan our wedding, I resolved to make most of the décor myself. I wanted every part of our wedding to have that personal touch that only handmade décor can bring. To give our wedding a down-to-earth atmosphere, we elected to use burlap, a rustic, natural-fiber fabric, for several aspects of our wedding. We used burlap to cover the hay bales used for seating during the cocktail hour, we wrapped it around the potted succulents used as table décor, and we used burlap bags to contain one of the wedding favors. We also made burlap table runners for each of the guest tables.

For wedding favors, we filled burlap bags with a special coffee blend we make at home, which we call the “Bernello Blend.” (“Bernello” is a hybrid of our last names.) Jaryd and I also loved the idea of using succulents at our wedding: for him, they’re reminiscent of the West, and for me, they are beautiful and wouldn’t go to waste (succulents will grow new roots if repotted). So, as a second wedding favor (which also doubled as table décor), we placed individual potted succulents at each place setting. The succulents were wrapped in burlap and tied with moss-covered wire and a tag that read “Let Love Grow.” We found a local Mennonite family to grow the succulents for us, and used the plants for both wedding favors and for the bouquets and boutonnieres! A friend and I made the table numbers using silver German glass glitter. The “Just Married” sign hanging on the front of our sweetheart table was made the same way. The table numbers made their home in the centerpieces — turquoise pots from Anthropologie filled with bright orange marigolds. Also on the tables were white candles, which sat on a bed of moss inside a clear hurricane glass. Moss was also used to cover the ring bearer’s pillow, as well as the card box at the gift table.
