From the Bride... The theme and feel of the wedding really came together after I decided on my wedding dress, which was designed and made by a local designer in Vancouver. The dress was simple but elegant and the layers of silk organza, embroidery on the bodice and the cathedral length veil had a romantic feeling. Since our surroundings were so beautiful and we did not want to detract from them, we kept the color palette soft with lots of white and cream and some blue and pink accents. We incorporated a subtle beach theme into the wedding using starfish and shell accents. Our wedding stationary featured a small blue starfish. My wedding bouquet had several pretty shells nestled amongst the flowers.

We also wanted our wedding to incorporate some Hawaiian elements. We choose to have a traditional Hawaiian ceremony that included a lei exchange. The start of the ceremony was signaled by three blows of a conch shell. I wore plumeria flowers in my hair. Drew’s wedding band was inlaid with Koa wood and was made by a designer on the Big Island. A ukulele player entertained our guests during the cocktail hour. The delicious dinner menu featured items that were all sourced locally, such as macadamia nut crusted ono and pineapple upside down cake. Our wedding cake was layered with coconut cream and lilikoi (passion fruit) fillings. The lauhala favor boxes were woven in Hawaii and topped with starfish.

Etsy.com was a major source of ideas and inspiration. Most of the hand-made elements of our wedding were purchased from Etsy vendors. This included my pearl wedding jewelry and clutch, the ring pillow, table runners and adorable beach-themed cake topper that was made to look like us. We also wanted to include some details that had special meaning. The eight pearl buttons from the wedding dress that my mother wore almost 40 years earlier on her wedding day were attached to my bouquet and was my something old.  My mother-in-law presented us with silver spoon on our engagement that had been passed down from her own mother as a gift to be given to her grandchildren. The shell-shaped spoon served as the perfect spot for capturing photos of our rings.
