From the Bride…Rut is from Thailand and I am from Northern Michigan. We meet 9 years ago at a small liberal arts college in Michigan. During our relationship we took many trips “up north” to visit my family, in the process creating many memories together. So, naturally when it came time to choose a location we decided a destination wedding to my hometown of Boyne City, Mich. would be ideal (we now live in Washington, D.C.). It became our mission to give our guests, most of whom traveled from all over the country, an unforgettable Northern Michigan experience.
We choose Sommerset Pointe Yacht Club and Marina–a slice of Northern Michigan heaven–as our venue. Its proximity to Lake Charlevoix, the wall of doors in the club house that opens onto their expansive deck overlooking the marina, and the sandy beach for our ceremony seemed like the perfect setting for our guests to relax, dine, celebrate and soak in the natural beauty of the area. Because Sommerset Pointe was “undiscovered” at the time it fit in our budget and we were able to bring in an outside caterer. After quite a bit of internet searching we came across Blackbird Gardens, Real Food Catering. With Mike Everts, owner, chef and farmer of Blackbird Gardens, we created the menu our dreams, a family style meal that highlighted local, seasonal, and organic foods. (We were so impressed to find out that Mike picked the salad from his garden on the day of our wedding–talk about fresh!) The finishing touch to the menu was the cake my amazingly-talented sister made, consisting of four luscious layers of yellow cake, with buttercream frosting and fresh raspberry and lemon fillings.
The style of the wedding–nautical chic–was inspired by the venue. The color scheme was shades of blue and neutrals accented by bright punches of colors. To give our guests a glimpse of the wedding style, we designed the stationary ourselves. This also helped us to stay on budget. Each piece of stationary included our compass rose monogram, inspired by the design on the ceiling of the yacht club; several different fonts; and fun, non-traditional language. We continued to save money by making many of the decorations ourselves: the banner, table runners, compass rose overlays, and “guest book” (drawn and painted by my grandma). We left the flowers to a pro, Sydney of Upsy Daisy Floral. She did an amazing job designing the flowers and staying within our budget without sacrificing style! The colors for the flowers used in centerpieces were inspired by the colors in painting that hung over the mantel in the yacht club. The bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages and ceremony flowers were designed using the same varieties and textures but in more subtle hues.
