I love this wedding and the fact that the bride, the oldest of nine, had all her siblings in her wedding. This celebration truly was a family DIY affair with the groom’s mother making by hand that incredibly delicious and gorgeous looking work of art that they call a ganache cake. Scroll down to see it, you really don’t want to miss it! Captured by Momento Photography, this vintage DIY is just bursting with ideas to infuse into your own day. From the Bride…I never was one to dream as a girl of what I’d want when I got married, so I actually had to stop and think. I found pretty soon though that I could only ‘think’ in shades of rose, ivory & grey. I considered blue briefly, but immediately my brain would jam up. So dusty rose it was. We knew straight away that we wanted to save as much money as possible, and that I was capable of giving any crafty project a go once. I’ve always loved DIY projects, bargain hunting and op-shops (thrift stores as you call them). I think our whole theme was born from about 80 little candle melted organza flowers that I had made, wondering what I’d do with them. They ended up being on our invitations, bridesmaid’s shoes and bridesmaid’s hairpieces.
The ceremony was both our favorite part of the day. We wrote the entire thing ourselves and had a long-standing family friend conduct it for us (with a pastor on hand to legalize) so were nervous as to how it would turn out. But it was an absolute dream come true. We had heaps of non-invited acquaintances attend the ceremony too which was so lovely, and join us for homemade biscuits (which my amazing mother created) and punch afterwards under the trees.
We saved money at the reception by only paying for an entre’ and main course, to be followed by a gourmet local ice cream buffet that we brought ourselves, served with the most delectable ganache mud cake made by Jason’s own mother. I tell you, that cake tasted as killer as it looked! And she brought it all the way from Melbourne. Everything you see is 100% icing too – from the ribbon, to the lace and the tiny strings of pearls! She crafted my vision perfectly. Our centerpieces were cake stands (or homemade cake stands made from a plate and upside-down light fitting) piled high with marshmallows. These not only looked cute but the guests loved plopping them in their champagne all night!!
The funnest thing about the wedding was probably the enthusiasm of my 8 siblings!! I am the oldest of 9 children and they all adore and hang off Jason like an older brother. Mum made pink bow ties for all the little boys and there was nothing cuter than seeing them run around, handing out fan programs at the ceremony, showing guests to their seats at the reception, gazing at the cake and telling people what the ‘kissing bells’ were for on their tables. They are still talking about it all.
