From the bride... The day I met Sheffer was the most magical day of my life and our wedding day was just as magical. The entire day was euphoric and our history and love for each other was woven into every part of it. When people asked me what our theme was I would panic thinking we didn’t have one but once the day came I realized it was one of vibrant love. We wanted bold colors, an open sky, and memories of our relationship scattered throughout. The main ingredient that made our wedding so magical was the love from every single guest there. It was a small wedding with immediate family and our closest friends. Sheffer’s son, Alexi, whom I am now proud to call my son, played an integral part in our wedding. He still continues to call it “our wedding” and asks if we can get married again! When Alexi walked down the aisle the love and support of everyone present was palpable.Sheffer and I are both relentless romantics and we used parts of our relationship as detail throughout our wedding. The first time I met Sheffer was at Irving Plaza in New York. He was in band that performed a samba line through the crowd at the end of every concert. As he was “sambaing” past me with his trombone he looked over and said, “Wow.” After the concert he gave me a napkin with his phone number on it. We hung out that night on a rooftop bar drinking Frieda Kahlo tequila, both which ended up on our head table. Yes, I saved the napkin after all these years, I just had a feeling… Sheffer’s ring was engraved with the single word “Wow” and mine with the word “smitten” because I still am today. I love bold colors and wanted our wedding to feel like we walked into a magical fairyland. Holly Flora really helped to realize our vision with their amazing floral designs and creativity. I found some old jars from a thrift shop from my hometown in New Canaan, and Holly Flora used them to decorate the tables.
My grandmother used to call me a little butterfly and since then my Mom has always given me things with beautiful butterflies on them so I really wanted to incorporate butterflies into our wedding. I decorated the gift card holder, a suitcase I found at the Pasadena flea market, with butterflies and placed butterflies on all the name cards. My parents were so supportive during our wedding planning and throughout my life so to honor them I gave them both handkerchiefs embroidered with statements that were symbolic in our lives. Our officiant was a family friend that has known Sheffer since he was born which made it very special to have him marry us. The scarf around his neck that he used for our hand fasting ceremony was a scarf that Sheffer gave me on our second date. Sheffer and I wrote the entire ceremony and some of our vows together. It was important that the ceremony be sacred and filled with rituals that were significant to us.
Our amazing photographer Suthi Picotte created our guest book with photos from our engagement session. Everyone loved looking through the photos while signing as well as seeing the childhood pictures I hung in an old frame. We could not have asked for a more magical and sacred day. Even though I didn’t think that we had a theme, I realized on that day we did. It was both Sheffer’s and my personality, and the love of our family and friends. We are so grateful to them for providing the love and support that truly made our wedding shine.
