To find a way to blend natural elements so seamlessly into a wedding is a talent indeed and one which this affair is showcasing beautifully. The old, knotty wood mixed with all of the pastel florals is a true match made in heaven and accompanied by the photography of Stephen DeVries Weddings and paper pretties by AB Design and Co., we just might have a little afternoon delight on our hands. From the Bride…Somehow God brought together a southern gal from Alabama and a farm boy from the fields of upstate New York. Two needles in a haystack united by the providence of God – that is the only way we know how to explain it, and we are thankful! We knew that planning a wedding would be difficult since I was living in Alabama during most of our engagement while Stephen was living in Germany, but we had to find a way. In the end we decided on a rustic outdoor theme that would merge my southern vintage style and Stephen’s pastoral childhood.
For our reception we chose a plantation home in the rural outskirts of Montgomery called The Oaks. To set the stage of our post-nuptuals party we asked the talented sister duo Lauren Ladner and Amelia Davis to take over flowers and decorations. I gave them a couple pictures and some ideas of what I wanted it to look like and they took it from there creating the perfect balance of flowers, wood, and light. We wanted a relaxed and natural atmosphere so we chose a neutral color palette accented with vintage hues and earthy textures. To create interest we designed each room in the plantation to have a different feel and aesthetic. On the actual night of the reception we were blessed with perfect weather and our guests were able to enjoy the gorgeous afternoon as they danced to the tunes of Blue Grass band The Act of Congress. The day slowly died to a picturesque sunset in the west until night had fallen all around us. The darkness of the venue contrasted beautifully with the lights of the plantation house pouring out onto the manicured lawn where guests mingled under a clear and star speckled sky. It was just one of those times when you think, “it can’t get any better than this…” when someone came up to us after cutting the cake and said, “do you know what tonight is? Look outside, there is a ‘super-moon’ tonight!” On March 19th the moon was at close to the earth that it can come and it was shining in all its brilliance!
We could not have been happier with the whole experience. For the next two days we kept saying, “that was the best wedding we have ever been to”, but then we reminded each other that every married couple probably says the same. Lastly, we can’t forget our amazing photographer, Stephen Devries, who was able to capture each moment from beginning to end. He did an excellent job and never made us feel rushed or forced, but simply captured the day as a natural observer, we couldn’t have been more pleased with the outcome of the photography.
